Apple says e-book price fixing charges 'simply not true,' Macmillan also responds

Apple says e-book price fixing charges
Not that we were expecting Apple and Macmillan to simply fess up and say, "you're right, totally tried to circumvent the free market," but both companies have come out swinging pretty hard against the allegations of price fixing. Apple has rejected the charges, calling them "simply not true." A company spokesman, Tom Neumayr, went so far as to tell Reuters that Cupertino was actually fostering competition by "breaking Amazon's monopolistic grip on the publishing industry." John Sargent, the CEO of Macmillan, defended his company's behavior in blog post, saying the publisher had done nothing illegal and that the concessions sought by the DOJ in settlement negotiations were "too onerous." It looks like the next step for both is to face off with the US government in court -- a daunting task, no matter how large your war chest.

Fetchnotes Launches A Simple, Cloud-Based Note-Taking Service (That Twitter Users Will Love)

fetchnotesFetchnotes is a promising, lightweight?note-taking?app for list makers and idea-havers which looks deceptively simple. But that simplicity is actually one of Fetchnotes' key selling points. It's meant to be fast and easy to use. And although there are a ton of apps for taking notes, from robust offerings like Evernote to more limited mobile apps like the Notes app that ships on the iPhone, Fetchnotes has an interesting idea about how note-taking apps should work ?- that is, they should work more like our own minds do. Thoughts come to us unbidden and we jot them down. That's it.

Author's fictional Titan hit iceberg years before the Titanic sank

Copies of original newspapers describing the sinking of the Titanic rest in an exhibit at the South Street Seaport??TORONTO - It was the largest ship of its day, described by its creator as "the greatest of the works of men."

Its seafaring days came to an abrupt and tragic end when it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic, destroying the vessel and killing most of the passengers on board. And it's a fictional boat brought to life 14 years before the Titanic ever set sail.

The ship plays a relatively minor role in "Futility," the 1898 novella penned by U.S. writer Morgan Robertson, but it has assumed nearly mythological status among scholars of the real-life disaster of 1912. It seems fitting for a boat christened the Titan.

Robertson's story is rife with details that seem positively surreal for readers of the post-Titanic era, with the nearly identical names being among the least striking.

The ships are approximately the same size, with the Titanic being only 25 metres longer than the Titan's 243. Both were capable of maximum speeds over 20 knots, and both carried only the bare legal minimum number of lifeboats for the thousands of passengers on board.

Robertson's opening description of the Titan could easily have been lifted from press clippings written before the Titanic's maiden voyage.

"SHE was the largest craft afloat and the greatest of the works of men. In her construction and maintenance were involved every science, profession, and trade known to civilization," the novella begins.

Both vessels were hailed as unsinkable, and both proved all too vulnerable after striking icebergs in mid-April.

The eerie parallels between Robertson's account of the Titan's demise and the sinking of the Titanic gave the author a reputation for precognition after 1912. But Paul Heyer, Titanic scholar and professor at Wilfrid Laurier University, said most of the coincidences can be explained with a look at the author's biography.

"He was someone who wrote about maritime affairs," Heyer said. "He was an experienced seaman, and he saw ships as getting very large and the possible danger that one of these behemoths would hit an iceberg."

Robertson's perception of ship-building trends, combined with his understanding of transatlantic travel, gave him ample material for a story depicting a naval catastrophe.

The final product, however, doesn't focus exclusively on the Titan. The action takes place on the doomed cruiseliner for the first half, but then shifts to an improbable struggle for physical survival and spiritual redemption on the iceberg before scenes in both the U.K. and New York.

The story's primary focus is a disgraced naval officer who overcomes alcoholism, finds Christianity and regains the love of his life after the trials of the Titan's sinking.

The novella also features some unorthodox action sequences, including scenes in which the ship mows down an oncoming vessel and the hero slays a polar bear to save a small child.

"He's not exactly a great literary stylist," Heyer said of Robertson. "Moralistic tone, implausible situations, poor character development. The only saving grace of the novella is intriguing information about the ship and her fate."

The lack of literary merit made "Futility" a footnote in the years after its publication, Heyer said, adding that its reputation changed drastically after the Titanic sank.

Robertson immediately earned a reputation that he spent the rest of his career disclaiming, he said.

"Everybody ran to him and said, 'Oh my god, you're psychic.'

'No,' he said, 'I know what I'm writing about, that's all.' "

It'll have to to sate the concerns of privacy organizations worldwide, since it's rumored to collect 84 different categories of information about you (85 if you count all those Instagram photos it just bought). It'll be gradually rolled out to all 845 million users in the coming weeks and is available from your general account settings.

Car recalls: Ford Focus is latest. Is yours on the list?

Car recalls now include Ford Focus manufactured between August 2010 and October 2011. Ford recall involves windshield-wiper motor defect.

Among car recalls, Ford is issuing an unusual one: windshield wipers. Specifically, the automaker is recalling some 140,000 new 2012 Ford Focus models due to a defect in the motor that runs the windshield wipers. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration announced the recall on its website.

The problem is in Focus models built between August 2010 and October 2011, and affected vehicles are missing a seal on the wiring harness connector to the passenger side wiper motor. Without the seal, water can build up in the motor connector and stop that windshield wiper from working, which could reduce visibility in rainy weather and increase the risk of an accident. Ford says 140,130 cars are potentially at risk.

"Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries attributed to this condition," company spokesman Dan Pierce wrote via e-mail.

The Dearborn, Mich., automaker will begin sending out letters to notify affected Focus owners on or around May 21, 2012 . Ford dealers will seal the wiper motor and replace nonfunctioning windshield wipers free of charge. Ford owners can also check? if there is an active recall on their vehicles by entering their VIN number at the Ford vehicle owner website: www.owner.ford.com.

In response to the recall, rental car company Avis Budget group temporarily grounded approximately 10,000 Ford Focus models on its rental fleets to temporarily prevent them from being rented in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.? Customers who may be renting Focus models at the moment can return them at no extra charge, but it isn?t required.

Focus owners can contact the Ford Motor Company?s Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332. To view the NHTSA?s official recall, visit safecar.gov and type in the campaign ID number: 12V149000.

Security Hole Spotted In Facebook Android SDK, Long Tail Apps May Still Be Unpatched

facebook-securityMobile app platform provider Parse is reporting having discovered a major security hole in the Facebook Android SDK. The problem was quickly patched after being reported to Facebook, but that alone may not be enough to secure affected mobile applications, the company says. The security vulnerability affected all apps using the Facebook Android SDK, including major apps like Foursquare, and there's no way for end users to know which app developers, outside the big ones, have implemented the fixes needed to secure users' data. (Except for Foursquare, which we know to be patched - whew!)

A Japanese study Wednesday said regular seaweed consumption among post-menopausal women heightened their risk of developingthyroid cancer, linking it to iodine in the?macrobiotic food.

A 14-year national survey of nearly 53,000?Japanese women, aged between 40 and 69, found that the group reported 134 thyroid cancer cases, including 113 cases of?papillary carcinoma, a common type of the illness.

Those who ate?seaweed?daily were 1.7 times more likely to developcancer?than those who ate it no more than twice a week, the study said.

The risk more than doubled among post-menopausal women who were about 3.8 times more likely to develop the cancer than those who limited their?consumption?of seaweed, a popular food in Japan, the study said.

?Seaweed consumption was clearly associated with an increased risk of papillary carcinoma,? said the study led by the?National Cancer Center?and?National Institute for Environmental Studies.

It was not clear why post-menopausal women had an increased risk of developing cancer but there may be a link with the iodine in seaweed, according to the research published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention.

Japanese women were particularly at risk given their regular ? and sometimes excessive ? consumption of seaweed, which accounted on average for about 80.0 percent of their iodine intake.

The survey did not say how much seaweed participants consumed during the study between 1993 and 2007.

A river rams through it: Argentina?s Rio Nuevo portends problems to come in South America

Mention Argentina to someone outside of the country, and chances are the discussion will turn to the mouth-watering quality of the beef. I heard all kinds of recommendations about enjoying this Argentinian delicacy when I was preparing to travel to this South American country.

Yet once there, I learned that Argentinian ranchers have been fading from the landscape in recent decades, much like their U.S. counterparts. In fact, a switch from ranching to farming is occurring throughout South America?s La Plata Basin, which includes north-central Argentina, Paraguay, a slice of Bolivia, much of Uruguay, and a large chunk of southern and central Brazil.

In the last four decades alone, landowners have converted a third of the basin?s 760 million acre area from grasslands and forests into crops ? especially soy. The economy, along with the availability of genetically engineered crops, has driven the transformation. Profits from the export of corn and soy have kept landowners in business, while the taxes on the exports provide crucial support for the governments involved.

An unexpected yield

Still, the large-scale shift to crops is having unexpected repercussions. According to research by scientist Celina Santoni and her colleagues at the San Luis laboratory headed by Esteban Jobb?gy, we?re looking at one of them on this blustery winter day.

It?s a 40-foot-deep chasm where the entrance to Alberto Panza?s 1,150-acre ranch once stood. The ripping birth of a new river ? aptly named the Rio Nuevo ? carved the gorge during an intense storm and flood in 2008.

Some three years after its emergence, Panza was showing the gaping results to Santoni and a few other scientists supported by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, a funding group that works to unite efforts among its 19 member countries. The institute was supporting her dissertation research, and my efforts to help synthesize results from the many IAI-supported research projects in the La Plata Basin.

By then, the river had relaxed into a calmer version of its earlier ground-tearing self. It meandered quietly along a bottom about as wide as a two-lane highway, but steep slopes prevented us from reaching it. On the other side of the gash, a dozen cows placidly nibbled the grass under a stand of native calden, a drought-tolerant tree related to desert mesquites of the U.S. Southwest.

In the past, ranchers would scatter their cattle among these dry forests as well as in the country?s lush grasslands. But cattle grazing is becoming less common as both forest and grassland give way to crops.

This, in turn, is raising water tables and loosening up underground pockets of salt.

Santoni points out white layers sitting like a sprinkling of powdered sugar on the mocha-colored banks below. The telltale crystals marked past levels of river flow, providing compelling evidence of its heavy salt load.

Although we can?t reach the river from Panza?s land, Santoni has taken hundreds of water samples from other stretches of the still-growing Rio Nuevo, which has ripped up roads as well as ranches over the years. Her analysis of the water?s conductivity ? a way of assessing salinity ? suggests the Rio Nuevo contains roughly five times the amount recommended by the World Health Organization for human consumption.

Similar problems occur in other regions of dryland agriculture throughout the world, from Texas to Canada to Australia. The emerging problem in Argentina seems to stem from the same beginnings, she explains: Salt that had been accumulating under dry forests and prairies for millennia can move into the topsoil as the water table lifts them to the surface.

She asks Panza if he had observed a difference in the height of the water table on his land over the years. The change in water table height was ?taller than me,? responded Panza, who stands about 6 foot tall. ?The water has risen two and a half meters in the last 15 or 10 years,? he said ? roughly 8 feet.

Argentina could learn from Australia?s harsh lessons, Santoni suggested, because Australians began converting another type of dry forest, eucalyptus, to agriculture more than a century ago. The results are especially apparent in the southwestern section of Western Australia.

?In the end,? Santoni said, ?what this produced were huge areas of soil that was salinized, with salt crusts that made them completely useless.?

Salty soils in the western pampas

It?s obvious when farm soil reaches the threshold of too much salt, as I learned a couple of days later. Nothing grows there.

We?re in the pampas, a classic grassland region, standing on a low-lying section of a 5,000-acre ranch-turned-farm owned by Gonzalo Laborde. Recently flooded, it still feels spongy underfoot. Rows of desiccated corn stalks shows evidence of recent growth nearby, but this parking-lot-sized patch of soil is barren. White crystals glisten in the noon light, looking from some angles like a thin sheet of ice on the brown soil.

Laborde is struggling to keep the salt patch from expanding. He and his consulting agronomist, Pablo Etcheverry, keep tabs on the water table height using a nearby measuring station marked by an upright PVC pipe. The height had dropped slightly since last month, down to 1.37 meters below the surface. Four and a half feet. Still a bit too close for comfort.

He has seen the water table rise in recent years, as he reported during a chat around the fireplace of the 1905 ranch house where he grew up, and now raises his own family.

From the perspective of former ranchers like Laborde, the government pushed ranchers into farming by its political efforts to keep beef prices low and restrict exports. In 1989, the Laborde family began making the switch from raising alfalfa and cattle to growing crops, enjoying the freedom to export all of their corn and about 90 percent of their soy. By 2000, they had sold off all their cows to focus on crop production.

Laborde is enthusiastic about efforts by researchers from Jobb?gy?s lab, which on this day include agricultural consultant Jorge Mercau and graduate student Eva Florio, to work with farmers to compile and analyze data at a much larger scale than an individual farm. The problem can?t start or end at the scale of an individual farm. It takes a watershed to create changes as extreme as the rise of the Rio Nuevo.

Back at the lab, Santoni showed an adapted satellite view at the scale of the El Morro watershed, where the Rio Nuevo made its appearance. Forest cover in the area had been reduced to 10 percent. Judging from aerial photos, she said, forest cover was only a fifth of what it had been in 1960, when these dry forests covered about half the watershed.

Un mapa de la napa

?The vision we have is to collaborate with the water table,? Laborde said. He and Etcheverry take monthly water table height measurements at 16 different places on the hacienda, using a satellite-based Geographic Positioning System to locate the sites.

Mapping how it fluctuates under the landscape is the first step in attempting to regulate the height of the water table, known in Spanish as la napa.

The idea of creating un mapa de la napa came from the farmers themselves, as opposed to being part of the original research plan, explains Jobb?gy, an ecologist and agronomist whose many publications include papers in Ecology, Nature and Science as well as Argentina?s popular Ciencia Hoy. A principal investigator who has been receiving IAI support since 2002, he said the institute encouraged him to collaborate with ?stakeholders,? an English word adopted into Spanish to mean any person with a stake in issues that could benefit from scientific investigations.

?Some of the amazing things that happened is that today, farmers are collecting data that we are using in our research ? really good data. They are partners in this research. This was not conceived in the beginning but it became an opportunity that we took,? Jobb?gy told me back at the Environmental Studies Laboratory he heads in San Luis. In a later interview, he added, ?Suddenly we can have 10 times more sampling points.?

Interpreting the data

Now comes perhaps a bigger challenge: explaining to collaborating and otherwise curious farmers how the rise of a river and emerging patches of salty soil relate to the switch from ranching to farming. Most locals blame the river?s rise on an increase in rainfall and a 1977 earthquake in San Juan Province.

Esteban Jobbágy

Esteban Jobb?gy

I asked Jobb?gy about this one afternoon around the blue ping-pong table that serves as the lab?s lunch table between occasional friendly competitions. Jobb?gy considers it extremely unlikely that the earthquake shifted the underground topography enough to set the stage for the emergence of the river more than 30 years later. Earthquakes have been known to unleash new rivers, he acknowledged, but they typically do so within days or weeks, not decades later.

Meanwhile, scientists and farmers generally agree that an increase in regional rainfall has contributed to the rise of the water table. But they differ in their opinions on the extent of this influence. Average annual rainfall in the past few decades has increased by 20 percent or more compared the long-term average of about 24 inches a year, based on records going back to the 1920s.

But Jobb?gy and other scientists see the rainfall increase itself only as a contributing factor, not the main reason for the river?s creation. If anything, he?s more likely to see a connection because several decades of above-average rainfall have helped inspire the expansion of crops in the region. The farms we visited and most others in the area lack any irrigation systems, and so rely mainly on rainfall.

Unlike many farmers in the area, Laborde already saw a connection between land use changes and the height of the water table.

?The water table is close to the surface throughout this region. Lately, it has risen,? Laborde explained. ?And the vision that we have is that it?s risen a bit ? or a lot ? because of the management by humans. With pasture or forest, the water table is lower. With pure agriculture, the groundwater has moved its ceiling a bit higher. At any moment, the water table can rise enough to bring problems of salinization.?

Where?s the salt?

Laborde?s understanding fits in well with the science coming out of Jobb?gy?s lab. There, researchers have found that native vegetation, especially trees, will latch onto incoming water, leaving little or none to trickle down into the water table below.

The green-barked chañar tree is another native species (Geoffroea sp.) being displaced by deforestation. Photo by Melanie Lenart.

The green-barked cha?ar tree is another native species (Geoffroea sp.) being displaced by deforestation. Photo by Melanie Lenart.

In the past, native forests would respond to years of higher than usual rainfall by growing faster. Annual growth of many trees registers in their tree rings, with wet years showing up as years of abundant growth. This is why researchers often use variations in tree-ring width to estimate precipitation rates for the years before historical record-keeping. It?s also why the water table under dry forest on its own remains roughly stable regardless of typical climate variability.

Crops, however, don?t use nearly as much water as trees. They even use far less than perennial grasses, whether alfalfa or pampas plants. For one thing, crops grow for only a season. More water gets past bare soil than roots to seep into the water table below.

But where does the salt come from? Salt occurs naturally in the soil, and also can arrive with maritime winds. In humid environments, rejected salts wash out with the water draining through the soils. In dry environments, though, vegetation can get in the middle and interrupt this would-be downward flow.

Forests not only mine all the water that rains down on the site, they also reject most salts in the process. According to research reported by Santoni, Jobb?gy and others in a 2011 Ecological Applications article, these salts build up under the root zone, creating pockets some 10 to 40 feet below the surface. Salts can also accumulate under grasslands, especially in low-lying areas.

By comparing the soil profile under intact forests and nearby crop parcels with known dates of initiation, the researchers were able to show the general dissolution of the salt pockets at 15 to 30 years after the switch from native forests to crops.

Anticipating change

The transformation of land from ranching to farming began in the humid Pampas in the 1960s and spread outward in the 1970s. It has accelerated in the past 15 years, in the El Morro watershed and throughout the La Plata Basin. This means it could just be reaching critical mass for watershed-scale changes in the water table height and associated delivery of salt.

?The idea is to anticipate this,? Santoni explained. ?Then, perhaps we can propose management techniques to conserve part of the natural forest within agricultural zones. Having islands of forest within crop zones might help avoid these drastic changes.?

None of the farmers the researchers have talked to are interested in turning back the clock and shifting back from crops to cattle, or in planting trees on land they could otherwise be farming. And it?s a fine line between having water near the surface, where crops can benefit from it, and too near the surface, where it can flood and bring damaging salt into topsoil. A dry summer in 2012 left wilted corn and reduced crop yields in the area, Laborde said. This could allay some farmers? concerns about the rising water table in the short term.

Still, Jobb?gy and others hope to work with farmers and government officials to come up with some acceptable solutions that could keep agriculture in the region viable over the long term.

It would be much easier to stabilize the water table before it crosses a threshold than try to correct it afterward. For instance, modeling research in Australia suggests a 15 or 20 percent cover of well-placed perennial vegetation across the landscape might do the trick. On the other hand, Jobb?gy noted, Australians have found they may need to return 70 percent or more of an area to forest to restore it once the water table has gotten too close to the surface. Once the salinity threshold has been crossed, the soil will support only salt-tolerant species ? which do not include corn and soy.

A less salty solution

The researchers are still working out the percent of perennial plant cover that might be needed to stabilize the area around San Luis. They recognize that farmers might be more willing to consider planting forage species than trees, so they?re trying to provide some agricultural solutions.

Santoni, for instance, is modeling whether planting alfalfa ? a high-quality feed that yields high-priced beef ? could help alleviate or prevent the kind of dramatic changes faced by some local farmers. Alfalfa roots can penetrate some 20 feet down, making them useful in the effort to move water up and out of the soil.

Jobb?gy is working with colleagues to consider whether double-cropping ? which typically means planting winter wheat during the region?s mild winters ? could help consume enough water to keep the water table at bay. Although most of the annual rainfall comes during the summer, the lower evaporation rates during winter can permit rainfall to slip below the root zone ? especially if ground cover is sparse or non-existent.

?One of the messages is that farmers, knowingly or unknowingly, are responsible for some of the hydrology in the region,? Jobb?gy said. While some may not be thrilled to hear that their activities could have negative consequences, there?s a positive side to this knowledge. ?The good news is that we are helping them to manage an amazing resource.?

Laborde, for instance, was making efforts to adopt new management techniques to protect the water table. He was leaving plant residues ? such as the desiccated corn husks covering the ground near the salt patch ? as a layer of beneficial litter that protects the soil. He was growing winter wheat on some of his land to help transpire water during the cool season, when many farmers don?t plant anything. He even had alfalfa growing on a small area, mainly to indulge the horses he keeps because of his passion for polo.

He?d like to see other farmers join in with such efforts, even though growing winter wheat and alfalfa do little to boost the bottom line.

While it?s not likely that farmers or the governments involved will be interested in braking agricultural engines that are driving economic recovery, Jobb?gy and his team hope to generate interest in maintaining enough year-round plants in place ? even if they?re alfalfa rather than native trees ? to keep agriculture sustainable.

?For me, a world that?s producing more and more grain ? I like that? because it can feed more people, he said. ?I don?t see it as a bad idea to get more from our ecosystems. We have a lot to gain, and we can mitigate some of the losses.?

Kingston HyperX 3K SSD review round-up: Cheaper than its predecessor and almost as good

Kingston's new HyperX 3K SSD has appeared, powered by a second-generation SandForce SF-2281 processor. Sizes ranging from 90GB to 480GB and are appropriately priced between $140 to $700 -- depending on your storage tastes. With a SATA 6Gb/s interface wrapped in a black and aluminum casing, the HyperX 3K looks ready to spar with Intel's similarly SandForce-powered SSDs. Kingston's 2.5-inch drives have also finished the review party circuit, picking up some pretty positive responses. According to Anandtech's testing, the HyperX 3K performs almost as well as its 5K predecessor, landing just behind it for light workload tests (309.4 MB/s on average) and a heavy workload performance (225.8 MB/s) that netted it second place. Overall, they reckon the HyperX 3K is a "no-brainer," offering great performance for less of those hard-earned dollars.

The relatively rugged design was the first thing that caught Storage Review's eye, due to Kingston's (presumably necessary) thermal armor. The site was suitably impressed by read rates, which were comparable to the original HyperX SSD. Write performance didn't hold up quite as well during tests and due to the reduced quality of the NAND memory used, you will see a drop on total write cycles possible -- something that mainstream users probably won't lose much sleep over. Storage Review maintains that when it comes to both performance and pricing, Kingston's latest "delivers on both fronts." You can take a closer look at what both reviews have to say -- and a whole load of tests -- at the sources below.

Relationship Marketing Online | The Article Resource Guide

?

By F Floyd Khumalo

When people started marketing online, the only thing you needed to be a success was to know more than your rivals. The internet marketers that were the first to employ autoresponders and leverage Google Adwords put themselves in a position to profit because there was little or no competition back then. The world of online marketing has developed substantially since that time and it is more important than ever to build positive relationships with new and present customers. In this post we?ll look into the various areas where relationship marketing is essential and how to use it to build your business.

While email marketing is no longer the sole method of reaching your customers, it remains an important aspect of online business building. Building a list is different since the primary focus is not really on increasing your number of subscribers. The truth is that anybody who joins your list will also be on a number of other lists and the aim for you is to make sure your emails are the ones that get read. You already know that open rates have undoubtedly fallen recently, so your subscribers have to see you as someone whose messages are viewed too important to miss out on. It?s a fact in life that the more you give, the more you can actually expect to receive. You will find that your customers are more willing to buy things that you highly recommend if you have previously provided them valuable information at no cost.

So if we believe that email marketing continues to be important, we must also recognize that social media has introduced a new era for relationship marketing. It is a fact that web sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn play a huge role in the lives of many people and discussions occur that can improve or harm a business online. If you?re an online marketer, it?s not a bad idea to interact on these websites provided that you are attempting to give your visitors a great experience. People are more likely to have a look at your site or subscribe to your email list if they have a positive experience with you on these websites. This is the aim as then you can convert visitors into buyers through your email correspondence or onsite marketing.

If you choose to study these social sites, you can expect to easily find a passionate group of people who will follow you because of how you establish a relationship with them. There are numerous internet marketers who have experienced good results with these sites and you can imitate them in your own business. As with any marketing online, if you learn from people who are already successful in an area, you can avoid many of the mistakes that can be difficult to repair.

Curtsive's Art Thread, I guess.

So, I guess I'm starting up an art thread. A big part of it is just because I need to work at 10 posts to use the private messaging system, and I don't really have a reason to post in the forum much. But I'll throw my recent works up here, starting with a few of mine.

This and This, which are the initial arts for Joachim Friedman, a character of mine.
Rosalin, another character concept of mine.
Sci-Fi Melee Fighter Guy, a request from Nocte.
And some octopus lady I drew a few minutes ago.

I tend to go through long lapses of time without making any art, as I'm severely unmotivated to do so, but I'll update the thread when I do. If it's not too bad a piece, that is.

Tribe's Santana hits 2 HRs on 26th birthday

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:16 p.m. ET April 8, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians' first win of the season wasn't exactly a piece of cake. Still, it was worth celebrating.

Carlos Santana hit two home runs on his 26th birthday, Derek Lowe pitched seven strong innings and Cleveland's bullpen finally held a lead - barely - and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 Sunday.

"Let's tell him it's his birthday every day," said Cleveland closer Chris Perez, who retired Toronto slugger Jose Bautista on an infield popup with the bases loaded to earn the save.

"I wouldn't mind if it was my birthday every day, but I would be an old man if that happened," Santana said.

Santana opened the second inning with a drive over the wall in center. He connected a second time off Joel Carreno (0-1) in the fifth, a two-run shot to right that broke a 2-all tie.

On his last four birthdays, including two years in the minors, Santana is 10 for 17 with five homers and 13 RBIs.

"I don't know why, maybe I am just excited," Santana said.

Toronto won the first two games by 7-4 scores. The first went 16 innings, the longest opening-day game in history, and the second game lasted 12 innings. The Indians led in all three games. This time, their bullpen did not allow the Blue Jays to go ahead.

Joe Smith replaced Lowe to start the eighth and yielded three consecutive one-out singles and a run. Adam Lind's RBI single made it 4-3.

Vinnie Pestano came on and struck out Edwin Encarnacion and Lawrie to end the threat.

"That was huge," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He made some very big pitches there."

Perez then closed it out to make Lowe a winner.

Lowe (1-0) got 15 outs on grounders and allowed two unearned runs in his Indians debut. Encarnacion had an RBI double and Brett Lawrie a sacrifice fly as Toronto tied it at 2 in the fourth.

"Lowe was fantastic," Acta said. "He gave us a good solid start. Then Perez really made some tough pitches for the save. Our defense tried to get us in trouble, gave us a bit of a scare there.

"It's a funny game. You blow one when up by three, then save one against one of the best hitters in the game."

Perez, who gave up three runs in the ninth inning on opening day, survived a critical error by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on a potential game-ending double play grounder. The miscue put runners on first and second with one out.

"That was a rarity," Perez said. "It could have been over. He's not going to do that very often. He's (usually) going to pick me up, making diving plays."

Perez came back to strike out Yunel Escobar, but walked Kelly Johnson. That brought up Bautista, who led the majors in homers with 54 and 43 the past two years and was 5 of 9 with a homer off Perez.

"Facing him with the game on the line, that's not exactly what I wanted," Perez said. "That's why I play the game. It's a lot of fun."

Blue Jays manager John Farrell liked Toronto's chances.

"Anytime you have Jose Bautista at the plate with the tying run on third, we'll sign up for that opportunity each and every game," Farrell said. "We chipped away and battled back to be one swing away."

Bautista thought it was a good pitch to hit.

"It was a fastball," Bautista said. "It was very hittable. I was a little early on it, just a tad bit ahead of it."

It was the third straight strong start by the Indians' rotation. Cleveland starters compiled a 1.23 ERA in the series.

Lowe, in his 16th season, allowed five hits and had one walk and one strikeout. The 38-year-old right-hander showed no ill effects of some tightness in his right ribcage that caused him to leave an exhibition start on March 29.

Acquired from Atlanta this offseason, Lowe made his first appearance at Progressive Field since May 2004, for Boston. He spent the past seven years in the National League.

Carreno, making his first career start, gave up six hits and walked four over six innings. The right-hander had worked 11 times in relief a year ago for the Blue Jays. Afterward, the Blue Jays optioned Carreno to Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled LHP Aaron Laffey. Toronto doesn't need a fifth starter until April 21.

NOTES: It was Santana's second career multihomer game. The other came Sept. 13 at Texas. ... In 171 career games as the home starter, Lowe's teams are 103-68. ... Cabrera made a diving stop followed by a whirling throw to rob Escobar of a hit in the third. ... Cleveland 1B Casey Kotchman snapped an 0 for 13 season start with a fourth-inning single. ... On Monday, RHP Henderson Alvarez will pitch the Blue Jays' home opener against AL East rival Boston and LHP Felix Doubront. Cleveland sends RHP Josh Tomlin against the visiting AL Central rival Chicago White Sox and LHP Chris Sale.
