Fight the Good Fight: 10 Steps to a Happier, Healthier Relationship ...

By Dr. Howard Rankin

1. Ask yourself: Do I want to be right or do I want to be happy? In many, many arguments, there is no right or wrong, merely different perceptions. But couples will often get to the point where they are just trying to prove their point and win the argument, rather than genuinely listen and try to solve the problem. This is a failing tactic for two reasons: 1) Even if you come up with a brilliant, winning point, your partner?s not likely to accept it-at least not right away. The really effective communicator gets the other person to own the idea, not force it down his or her throat. 2) Trying to win merely polarizes the partners and feeds their anger and resentment
making the discussion very unproductive if not downright destructive.

2. In general, try to create a positive environment for communication. If you want anyone, your partner in particular, to talk about his innermost feelings and thoughts, you have to create an environment in which he feels safe doing so.

?Early in my career I was working with a couple where the wife complained that her husband didn?t communicate with her,? explains Rankin. ?And sure enough, he sat silently through several counseling sessions. During our fourth session, he finally opened up and his wife immediately attacked what he was saying. He promptly stood up, said, ?That?s why I never say anything,? and left, never to be seen again.?

3. Don?t take arguments at face value. Few arguments are what they appear to be about on the surface. This is important to realize, especially if you and your partner are having the same argument over and over. The truth is that arguments about trivial things, like laundry, are generally about control. Even conflicts about sex and money are really about control when you get down to it. Once you know that control is a problem issue for you, says Dr. Rankin, you?ll at least have a clue as to how to address it.

?Of course, in a relationship, both partners can?t have 51 percent all the time,? he says. ?Still, if there is a mutual sense that control is by and large equitably distributed, these sorts of arguments are way less likely to occur.?

4. Let your partner finish what she is saying. Having observed many heated ?discussions? in his therapy sessions, Rankin says he knows first-hand things are headed south when partners start interrupting each other. It?s a sign that at least the interrupting partner is out to win and has stopped listening.

5. Don?t bring other people?s views into the argument. It can feel good to hash out your relationship issues with your mother, your best friend, or around the water cooler at work. But it?s not helpful to drag their opinions into a heated discussion with your spouse or partner. Consider this: It?s unlikely your friends will disagree with you, especially as you almost certainly presented only your side of the incident. (Chances are you?ve never had someone say to you, ?I polled 100 random people I don?t know, presented both sides of the argument in a balanced way, and 63 percent of those polled agreed with me.?)

?It just isn?t helpful to drag other people into a discussion that should be between you and your partner only,? explains Dr. Rankin. ?What you are doing is trying to create witnesses for your point of view as if you were in front of a judge. And as you?ll see in my next tip, that?s not what a healthy, productive discussion is about.?

Actually, he adds, you might want to reconsider your ?let it all hang out? policy altogether. The problem with discussing sensitive relationship issues with your friends, family, and coworkers is that it influences their attitude toward your spouse or partner, which won?t change after you?ve reconciled.

6. Remind yourself: You?re not in front of a judge. Some people argue with their partners as if they were addressing the judge and jury. This tactic will not get you very far, and here?s why: Your partner is not a coolly objective third party or a computer. Your Spock-like logic is wasted on him, especially in the heat of the moment.

?Every productive communication is about emotion and respect, rather than dispassionate logic,? says Dr. Rankin. ?Remember, people are emotional beings with the ability to rationalize, not logical beings with feelings.?

7. Don?t bring up ancient history. To some extent, this argument tactic reflects a gender difference, says Rankin. Typically, women are more likely to see the patterns in events with emotional significance so that today?s transgression resonates with many similar occasions in the past. Men don?t get this and think their partners are being irrelevant and overly critical.

Here?s the bottom line: Given that memory is imperfect and influenced by the present, unless this transgression is an exact repetition of past behavior and represents a destructive pattern of behavior, leave past events out of current discussions.

8. And speaking of gender differences. Realize they exist. No doubt about it ? Men and women are made differently, and this truth is the source of many pitfalls. In general, women see the world in terms of connections and relationships, and men see the world in terms of status and power. This leads to some interesting differences in communication-even in the meaning of words. For example, the word ?sorry? to a woman often connotes empathy whereas for men it is more likely to mean a confession or an apology.

?I?ve seen a well-intentioned man make a sarcastic comment to his wife, which amongst his male friends would be the cause for laughter and bonding,? says Dr. Rankin. ?Unfortunately, said to his wife, his words created anger and hurt.?

9. Extend the fuse. Once the brain chemicals that underpin anger and frustration get going, it?s hard, if not impossible, to stop them. So one mutual goal in sensitive discussions should be to ?extend the fuse,? because once it?s been lit, the argument is going nowhere productive.

?The longer you can stay respectful and manage your emotions, the better the outcome is likely to be,? notes Dr. Rankin.

10. Avoid abuse and threats and NEVER use the D-word. It should go without saying that the first signs of abuse or threat end any chance of a useful discussion. Constantly bringing up the threat of divorce in every argument isn?t helpful. And constantly making threats as an arguing tactic but never following through on them is likely to backfire as they lose any potential power they might have after a while.

In general people vary in their ability to present arguments and in their communication and influence skills, but don?t rejoice too much if you happen to be better than your partner at this. If one partner feels overmatched in a verbal discussion, she simply won?t compete and will find other ways of expressing herself-like passive-aggressiveness, deceit, or other ways of acting out.

Talking things out is the best and most effective way of resolving conflicts. If you can?t do it, you?ll surely resort to less effective and more destructive ways of expressing your feelings.

Polycom Phone Home (and Office) - Brand New

ADV @ UnderConsideration

Opinion BY Armin

Polycom Logo, Before and After

Established in 1990, Polycom, with 3,800 employees in 80 offices in 36 countries, specializes in ?open standards-based unified communications (UC) solutions for telepresence, video, and voice.? If that means not much to you, they make those triangle, UFO-shaped phones that people scream at during conference calls ? they are as much a staple of corporate America offices as the cubicle. Simplification aside, Polycom does have quite the stronghold and edge on all kinds of conferencing platforms that go beyond the phone, offering video and mobile solutions ? they have more than 800 issued or pending patents too. Last week, Polycom introduced a new logo and identity designed by San Jose, CA-based John McNeil Studio that signals a commitment to continuing its transformation to a software-led company.

Polycom

One of the classic triangle speaker phones.

The new Polycom (as of May 2012) ? three fluid, transparent, elliptical arcs, symbolizing connection, mobility, information sharing and collaboration.

Polycom

Unveiling the new brand in the lobby of the Company?s new headquarters in San Jose, CA.

I loved the old logo: it was striking, simple, and very corporate. The icon mimicked the shape of its famous triangle phone and even the wispy serif all caps wordmark had some gravitas to it. But I can see all the reason why Polycom wanted to move away from it: it?s not about the phone anymore, it?s not a product or service just for Fortune 500 companies, it?s not friendly enough. In exchange Polycom has gotten a logo that solves all those issues through a perfectly generic execution and ambiguously explained concept: The three rings that symbolize blah blah blah are uninspired and the Gotham book weight wordmark is one of a dozen things like it we?ve seen the past five years. For a company leading in innovation and entrenched so deeply with corporations one would hope that they would be more risky or innovative in how they portray themselves. This is just safe work at best.

Blog Archive ? The true significance of the word adult

May 29

How can one classify a true adult? Many people directly attribute age to adulthood. The problem with this methodology becomes evident when you discuss the topic with various people of different cultural backgrounds. Adult may not mean you can operate the raymond mill. If you ask each of them what age they believe constitutes the point at which a person progresses from childhood into adulthood, their answers will always be different. Why? Because every one of the answers are based on subjective opinion. Adulthood is not based age; it?s based strictly on emotional maturity.
So what constitutes emotional maturity, and thus adulthood? Here are 20 defining characteristics of a true adult:
Realizing that maturity is an ongoing process, not a state, and continuously striving for self improvement.
Able to manage personal jealousy and feelings of envy.
Has the ability to listen to and evaluate the viewpoints of others.
Maintains patience and flexibility on a daily basis.
Accepts the fact that you can?t always win, and learns from mistakes instead of whining about the outcome.
Does not overanalyze negative points, but instead looks for the positive points in the subject being analyzed.
Is able to differentiate between rational decision making and emotional impulse.
Understands that no skill or talent can overshadow the act of preparation.
Capable of managing temper and anger.
Keeps other people?s feeling in mind and limits selfishness.
Being able to distinguish between ?needs? and ?wants?
Shows confidence without being overly arrogant.
Handles pressure with self composure.
Takes ownership and responsibility of personal actions.
Manages personal fears.
Able to see the various shades of grey between the extremes of black and white in every situation.
Accepts negative feedback as a tool for self improvement.
Aware of personal insecurities and self-esteem.
Able to separate true love from transitory infatuation.
Understanding that open communication is the key to progression.
Above all, true adults do what they have to do when it is required of them, and they do what they want when they can. They are able to distinguish between the two and manage their time and efforts accordingly.

Customs stops delaying HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE devices after 'review'

Customs stops delaying HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE devices after 'review'

HTC-branded crates have been trickling through customs for ten days already, following a total clamp-down earlier in May, but it's only now that they're able to pass through without lengthy extra checks. The manufacturer says it has "completed the review process with US Customs" and that it is "confident that we will soon be able to meet the demand for our products." That obviously raises the question as to why the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE devices were held up in the first place. The ITC had earlier ruled that HTC infringed on an Apple patent about data detection, concerning a handset's ability to recognize and move around personal data, for example between the contact entry and the calendar, and it had given HTC until April to remove that feature. HTC agreed to that, but it appears customs officials initially needed to check every box to ensure that products arriving in the US were of the compliant type. Meanwhile, the LTE part of the EVO 4G is still waiting for its luggage.

First of all, you need to spend the time to visit some of the major institutions of Stock on the Internet. The second job I will leave to the exclusive and shutter. Each has its own standards for membership and to transfer the image.

In addition, software such as Photoshop, you can edit your digital photos is important to be ready for shipment. You take your camera and software is also time to learn before you start sending images to stock agencies.

For example, when I began, I had to concentrate on light studio still life of apples, vegetables, such as kitchenware such. I have my options my photos, I am, please refer to the very small turnover on a regular basis soon. I noticed that is received by the authority. I have taken there, since there is thousands of images already available from the same subject, I decided to go another way.

auto insurance 15212 Every year, more cars and drivers travel the highways. With so many cars on the road, accidents will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a minor setback and a major hassle. So how do you know what insurance you need and how much to buy? Coverage requirements vary by state/province but usually include the following: Pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical payments: This type of coverage is available in non-no-fault states and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: This applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverages, like car rental and emergency road service, are also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status and * Where you live Many people think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can save your financial well-being. Daily Online Alochona: Re: [mukto-mona] Madrasah Education

Of course he will ignore the chronology because it goes against his argument.

?

Here we have two people, Q. Rahman and K. Das, from two opposite poles, talking about something that, probably, others have?no interest at all. Q. Rahman is biased towards his religion, while K. Das is free from all religious obligations. How can you?convince a faith-based person coutering?his/her religious views? You can't. So far I have never seen any agreement between them. In fact, Q. Rahman thinks he is always right, and K. Das is always wrong in spite of all his references. Faith is not based on references. I think they have hit the wall at this point. I say - let's call it a day now. It's better not to prolong a discussion with an ideologue. Let's promote more discussions between two free-thinkers in stead; that's much more interesting. This is pretty boring ?.

Date: Monday, May 28, 2012, 8:49 PM ? You have ignored the chronology of Hebrew and Arabic languages.? Arabic was developed about three thousand years later than Hebrew mostly from the language of the Nestorians.? A few Hebrew words might have diffused into Arabic and that does not make them sister languages.? Consider the ethnicity of the monk Bahira alias Sergius the Nestorian and you would get the clue of simultaneous development of Islam and Arabic.

To get a proper 'education', you might need to unlearn most of what you learned before.? Arabic and Hebrew scripts , instead of being very similar as your observation is, have no similarity at all.

However if you have more credible source than "curator", feel free to share.

I am sharing an interesting article, which has few Hebrew alphabet. Since most Muslims do know Arabic alphabets, I need not to explain more to them. ....

The 5th chapter of Songs of Solomon is discussing someone. Jews will say it is discussing Solomon, while Christians will say it is discussing Jesus. Considering this is the Songs of Solomon, it would seem logical that it is discussing Solomon. The verses describing this mystery man have the narators speech conjuagted in the feminine (meaning it is a woman who is describing this man) so it is possible that it is one of Solomon's wives discussing her Husband (Solomon). However, if a Christian tries to assert that Jesus is being discussed, then they are insinuating that this is discussing a future prophet (a man who was not yet alive at that point), a prophesy.... If the 5th chapter of Songs of Solomon is looking into the future, then there is no doubt it is discussing Muhammad.

Throughout the chapter, someone is being discussed. Whomever it is, verse 15 says his "countenance (face) is as Lebanon", so this is an Arabic gentleman (or Arab looking), a Semitic man none the less. Verse 11 says "his head is as the most fine gold, his locks are wavy, and black as a raven". Verse 10 describes this man as being "radiant and ruddy" which means he was slightly light-skinned with a rosy color. This can be confirmed in the Sahih Bukhari Hadiths,?Volume 4, Book 56, Number 747, which says Muhammad was slightly light skinned, with a rosy color (and also has the same hair as is mentioned in verse 11). Also verse 14 describes this man as having a stomach like ivory. I take it this means the parts of his body that were usually covered by his garment from the sun, were very white (like ivory). This also can be atributed to Muhammad who although having a rosy, golden color, had white armpitts (Sahih Bukhari, Volume?2, Book 17, Number 141?says you could see the whites of his armpitt when he raised his hand). WHAT'S THE POINT?!?!

In conclusion, if Songs of Solomon chapter 5 is discussing a man to come after that time, it is without a doubt Muhammad, as it even mentions his name. Any Christian who believes Jesus is the Messiah, and believes that books were sent down by God after the TaNaKh (Jewish Bible), then surely they should take into account what they just read here, and consider the Qur'an before making a decision.

In an exhibition of scriptures in a University museum, the curator approached me failing to find any similarity between those two scriptures.? I suggested him to compare between the Arabic and Nestorian scriptures which he did and came back in minutes and said, "How come did you know it but I didn't"? My answer was rude as usual, "I read history on passion, you did it to make a living"? Like it or not religion is part of our culture and reality of our lives. So if we have enough "Educated" people among us with basic education of religious scripture, we can confront fanaticism and politicization of religion. As far as Islam is concern, it has structure to support politics but it does NOT support abusing religion to oppress innocent people. Because of a acute lack of basic understanding of Islam, the mainstream population hesitate to stand up against abusing of religion.

Madrassa is simply arabic word for school (As far as I understand it). You can call it "Patshala" if you please but quality of education should be our "Common concern". We are producing "One liner idiots" in most cases than people with fundamental understanding of religion.

My two cents.....

1. It is a nice analogy. A book on the theory of probability mentions: If you put a monkey with a typewriter in front of it, by randomly typing, the monkey will one day recreate a sonnet of Shakespeare.

2. There was a time when individual Sanskrit?scholars used to run Sanskrit school as a profession. Curriculum included Indian philosophy including Charvak, grammar, literature, alankar, as well as orthodox scriptures. Traces of it may still exist but they do not produce any enlightened graduates. The recent graduates?even don't know how to write and read Sanskrit (Devnagori) scripts. They create orthodox priests at best. Indian philosophy and Sanskrit literature?are now taught in mainstream education system. The process of transition was obviously painful as it involved earnings of so many Sanskrit scholars who used to run the schools and their graduates. ?

Shah Deedar you are simplistic. These Madrasah graduates kept the Masjids running, the morals of the nation safe to the extent possible.Madrasas produced many political leaders like Akram Khan, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad., Mufti Mahmud, Moulana Atahar Ali in the past.

Many others who graduated from universities had initial education Madrasas.Even now about one third of the students get education in Dakhil Madrasas and then to the universities and they are better in education and conduct on balance in most cases.

The Madrasa stream is not harming national development. It is assisting by producing relatively more disciplined citizens.

The fact on the ground level is that for the benefit of future generations of Muslims in the subcontinent

? ? ? ? ?

? Madrassahs should be BANNED from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh .

???????????? The traditional 'moktob' on Fridays that give 'ampara' lessons to little boys and girls at the local mosques in the village have been sufficient religious education for centuries.? In the cities parents can send their children to a weekend 'diniyat' school or something to pick up skills to read the Qur'an.? Parents can provide the needed religious education for their children (just as Mr. Rahman's parents did) without thousands and thousands and thousands of Madrassahs all over the country. The Muslims of Bangladesh are 'naturally' better quality Muslims than their berathars and sisters in the Kingdom of Jahiliya (otherwise known as Saudi Arabia ).

?????????????? There should be proper Religious Seminaries or especial Madrassahs where Imams and Khadems of mosques should receive their education.

??????????????

If you cannot see the politics behind the establishment of these educationally backward,? harmful and useless madrassahs then you ARE part of the propaganda. This has nothing to do with religion.

1. I will use the word "karma" as a religious or philosophical concept. The said word has very deep meanings.

2. Atheists (example, the Stalin era in the USSR ) may have agenda that can prompt them to kill and torture. I hope I have properly understood the meaning of the statement "Without communal agenda, atheists have no reason to abandon good karmas". Killings and torture by many "religious" dictators (example, Saddam) were or are not communally motivated. The holocausts that descended on the Jews (WW II) and Hindus (1971) were mostly communal in nature. In these two cases Hitler and Yahiya Khan were the villains.???

3. Hatred, discrimination, persecution, and killing are rooted in scriptures. It depends on the ruler how he interprets and implements it. AL (I prefer using AL to BAL--it is my problem, Mr. Rahaman, as the sense of sin is in my mind as I am prejudiced with the word BAL) gave us a great constitution although there was hardly any atheists in that party. Nazibullah and Mollah Omar had diametrically opposite agenda---the former one's being far more progressive and humanitarian than that of the latter's. Even a Taliban member who fought against Soviet ocuupation does not want Taliban to come back to power with the same agenda (closing girls' school for example).?

4. In my judgement (following Campbell ), both Islam and Hinduism originally were tribal in nature. Although the rituals have mostly remained triabal in nature (comparatively more dominating in Hinduism), both the religions are getting more and more universal. Given the multi-cultural, multi-racial, and multi-religious interactive and interdependent pluralistic societies, there is no way out. Isolated and closed societies are suicidal.

5. I do not believe in divine authorities. Every thing we see in scriptures are man made and were captured in the minds and hearts of the sages. Since they are man made and hence are bound to be time- and place-specific, only man?is legitimately entitled to challenge, modify, and update them. I always emphasize on the word "reinterpretation". I find the concept of "reincarnation" or "Avatar" interesting and instructive. If we are afraid to challenge, reinterpret, and update, we are doomed to live a life that is not "modern". The concept of "Avatar" guarantees the progress of the society as you do not get stuck to a particular Avatar and successive Avatrs are supposed to be more and more progressive.?

6. It does not matter when eating beef was forbidden, it is still a fact that to a practicing Hindu, the?cow is sacred and eating beef is against his religion. I have seen many Hindus not following this religious edict thanks to the freedom and rationality that they use to break the barrier to enjoy the cheap resources of the world a little bit more. Christians in general are more open in this matter.

7. I am aware that Mr. Rahman is not advocation for implementing Islamic rule in Bangladeh. But I wnt to emphasize that I am dead against the so called?"Islamic" rule in Bangladesh . I like 1972 constitution which has?already been raped?several times. I believe in the principle of "separation of the church from the state". Even I do not buy the idea that a state ( Bangladesh )?get pro-actively involved with an international organization (OIC) in declaring a city (Dhaka) as the capital (Dhaka)?of?a particular religious (Islamic) culture of a continent ( Asia ) for a particular year (1212). I am not aware of the terms of reference that Bangladesh will have to follow in case of capital of Islamic culture matter. In my opinion it should kept private and not a state affair. It should however be allright for the PM who happens to be the head of the government of a Muslim majority country to become the chief guest in any occasion related to this. But what can we do??Our dependence on the Islamic countries is still unlimited.

8. I fully agree that the improvemnt in quality of Islamic education will minimize the unhappy incidences like the one that has recently happened in?a madrasa. Even?a several decades ago Greek philosophies used to be taught in the madrasas of the subcontinent. I am not sure what?they have now in the curriculum. Our governments have neither?commitments nor resources to improve the system. They do not have the courage either to undertake such a program. ????????

the, ists, without communal agenda, have no reason to abandon good-karmas. Also, in my view, there is another class of people who serve God through good-deeds only, devoid of any religious ideology have no incentive to deviate from their good-karmas.

>>>>>>>>>> I am sure disorder in Bangladesh bothers you enough to write about it. It is the same for me. However some of your assumptions are probably based on observation not based on teachings of religion. Rightly you pointed out that without communal agenda, atheists have no reason to abandon good-karmas.

Guess you "Assumed" that religion dictates us to work against people of other faiths and no faiths. Judging by some so called religious parties I cannot blame you for such assumptions but that is NOT what Islam (As a Muslim I just want to talk about Islam in my post) is all about. Unlike most prominent faiths, Islam does have a Global outlook. The criminal laws are mostly same for people of all faiths. It does not favor Muslims over non-Muslims. In civil cases there are differences (Like laws of inheritance). The main problem is so called religious parties often focus on laws that favors their own ideologies (Frequently it has a magical relationship with going to power and grow influence in politics). Muslims cannot pick and chose laws of Allah (SWT). They should try their level best to practice as much as possible. Which includes respecting "Rights" (Haq) of other people. Islamic "Communal agendas" is mainly talking about one God (Not forcing others to this ideology but TALKING about), establish rights of all people, secure peace for the mass. As I mentioned in a recent post BAL was flexible about it's socialist agenda and it helped our country in a big way. We cannot be slaves of "Processes" only, we have to ensure we are following processes properly. For most Muslims in Bangladesh , we are largely "Tradition bound" not religion bound. Guess you can say the same about Hindus as well. As one Hindu scholar mentioned, there is nothing in scriptures of "Sanatana Dharma" prohibiting it's followers from consuming beef but it was a popular movement to "Respond" to Jainism. So Hindus adopted some of the theologies of Jains and stopped eating beef. I feel if we can improve the "Quality" of Islamic education in Bangladesh , it will make our country a better place to live. fortunately there are some bright people who are working hard in educating people about authentic teachings of Islam and hopefully positively impact our country. Syrian activist @HamaEcho reports that the Syrian Revolution General Commission, an opposition coalition, has called for the UN to end Kofi Annan's peace plan.

The BBC's Leana Hosea writes of the video showing the massacre in Houla:

On a bedroom floor dozens of little children lie dead, their arms and legs strewn over one another. Many of their eyes are still open, bearing a look of shock and fright. They are all covered with blood and obviously suffered terrible deaths.

Official news agency SANA reports that the UN mission chief Major General Robert Mood called the Houla massacre a "brutal tragedy."

Soy supplement shows no blood pressure ... - Body Health & Fitness

Sun May 27, 2012 8:47pm EDT

(Reuters) ? Soy-rich diets have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, but soy supplements alone may not do anything for older women?s blood pressure, according to a U.S. study.

The findings, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, add to the mixed evidence on the health benefits of soy isoflavones ? compounds that are thought to have weak estrogen-like effects in some body tissue.

Researchers have long known that Asian populations with soy-rich diets have lower rates of heart disease compared with people who eat ?Western? diets, but it has not been clear whether soy isoflavone supplements have cardiovascular benefits, such as cutting blood pressure or cholesterol levels.

A number of studies have found that intravenous infusions of soy isoflavones may boost the body?s production of nitric oxide and help blood vessels dilate.

?But we don?t take soy by infusion,? said William Wong, a nutrition researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who led the study.

On top of that, he told Reuters Health, those studies looked at short-term effects on blood vessel function, and not whether there are ?sustained? benefits for blood pressure.

So for their study, Wong and his colleagues randomly assigned 24 menopausal women to take either soy isoflavones or placebo tablets for six weeks. The supplement gave a daily dose of 80 milligrams of isoflavones.

All of the women started the study with moderately elevated blood pressure. After six weeks, Wong?s team found that women on the soy supplement were faring no better than those on the placebo.

On average, systolic blood pressure was 136 mm/Hg in the placebo group, and 137 mm/Hg in the soy group. Systolic blood pressure is the first number in a blood-pressure reading, and levels of 140 mm/Hg or above are considered high.

As for diastolic blood pressure, the average in both groups landed at about 80 mm/Hg, or the upper threshold of ?normal.?

Wong?s team also did special blood tests to see whether the soy supplement affected the women?s production of nitric oxide, a chemical that dilates blood vessels. They found no effect.

?It was disappointing,? Wong said.

While the study only lasted for six weeks, Wong said that the time period should have been long enough to detect blood pressure benefits if there were any.

?If we didn?t see anything in six weeks, we doubt there would be effects (longer term),? he said.

He said that the health benefits linked to soy in Asian populations may be the result of a lifetime of eating those foods and taking supplements later in life may simply not have enough of an impact.

?I think that if people are looking for a magic bullet against high blood pressure, this is not it,? he added. SOURCE: bit.ly/Ku3fIt

The Transit of Venus: June 5-6, 2012

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Many astronomers and members of the public in Britain will be getting up early on the morning of June 6, so they can see (using precautions to avoid permanent eye damage)* the final Transit of Venus of the 21st century. The Transit, when Venus passes directly between Earth and the Sun, was last seen in 2004 and will not happen again until the year 2117.

To help the public view this rare phenomenon, the Royal Astronomical Society has created an online resource about the Transit, including a map of public events around the UK.

In astronomy, transits take place when a smaller body passes in front of a larger one. Although the Sun, Venus and Earth roughly line up every 584 days, the orbits of Earth and Venus around the Sun are tilted with respect to one another. This means that Venus normally appears to pass above or below the Sun. A transit only takes place on the rare occasions when the three bodies are almost exactly in line.

On average, Transits of Venus happens only every 80 years or so. This average figure is however very misleading, because transits occur in a 'pair of pairs' pattern that repeats every 243 years. First, two transits take place in December (around Dec 8th), 8 years apart. There follows a wait of 121 years 6 months, after which two June transits occur (around June 7th), again 8 years apart. After 105 years 6 months, the pattern repeats.

Prior to the last transit on 8 June 2004, no living person had seen a Transit of Venus (the previous one was on 6 December 1882). The forthcoming Transit will take place on 5-6 June 2012, but only the final stages will be visible from the UK. The entire event will be seen from eastern Asia and Australasia, the Pacific Ocean and the north-western parts of North America. The next transit of Venus after that will not take place until 2117, so 2012 will be the last chance in most of our lifetimes to see this extraordinary celestial event.

Observing the transit

*NEVER look directly at the Sun, with or without a telescope or pair of binoculars, without using a safe solar filter. To do is very dangerous and is likely to result in permanent blindness.

The 2012 Transit of Venus occurs on 5-6 June, with the whole event lasting slightly under seven hours. The transit starts at 23:04 British Summer Time (22:04 UTC) on 5 June, after the sun has set in the UK. It will take about 20 minutes from the point when Venus first encroaches onto the disk of the Sun ('first contact') until the planet is fully silhouetted ('second contact'). The planet will then take a curved path across the northern part of the Sun. Mid-transit is at about 02:30 BST (01:30 UTC) on 6 June. Venus begins to leave the Sun ('third contact') at about 05:37 BST (04:37 UTC), and the transit will be over ('fourth contact') at 05:55 BST (04:55 UTC). Timings differ by a few seconds for different latitudes, but the transit will be visible from any place where the Sun is up (clouds permitting).

Unfortunately, this means that only the final stages of the transit will be visible from the UK. As a guide, on 6 June the Sun rises at 04:30 in Edinburgh, 04:46 in London, 04:51 in Belfast and 04:58 in Cardiff (all BST), so observers in the UK will be able to see the final hour or so of the event.

During the Transit, Venus will be visible in silhouette as a dark disc set against the bright solar surface or photosphere. The planet is about 1/32nd of the diameter of the Sun, so it will block about 0.1% of the Sun's light from reaching Earth. Venus will be large enough to be just visible to someone with normal eyesight, without the help of binoculars or a telescope (this should NOT be attempted without appropriate safe solar filters).

For safe viewing of the transit, the same rules apply as those for observing a partial or annular eclipse of the Sun. Eclipse viewing glasses can be used, as long as they are undamaged and observing is limited to a few minutes at a time. Note that they must NOT be used with binoculars or a telescope. For an enlarged view, an image of the Sun can be projected onto a screen by a small telescope. Pinhole projection, however, will not produce a sharp enough image to show Venus clearly.

European observers should only use eclipse glasses that are marked CE under the EU Directive on the safety of Personal Protective Equipment. Observers in other locations should also use only approved safe eclipse glasses. These are certified to conform to an agreed and effective safety standard. Under that specification the glasses or their packaging must be marked with any applicable obsolescence deadline (colloquially, the 'best-before' date). The capacity of eclipse glasses to block harmful radiations from the sun reduces with time. For example, glasses bought for the total solar eclipse in Britain in 1999 are now nearly thirteen years old and should not be used. In any case observers should inspect pre-used glasses for damage (for example scratches, holes or a weakened mounting for the lenses) and consider replacing them if there is a risk that their effectiveness in protecting the eyes is reduced.

The best way to see the Transit in the UK is to join one of the 15 public observing events taking place around the country (see the map on the RAS Transit page: http://www.ras.org.uk/transit2012). In many cases these are led by amateur astronomy groups who are well placed to offer access to equipment and to give advice on viewing the Transit safely.

The scientific significance of transits

In the 18th and 19th centuries, transits of Venus presented valuable opportunities to tackle a fundamental problem of the time -- finding an accurate value for the distance between Earth and the Sun, called the 'Astronomical Unit' (AU). Modern determinations of the AU fix it at 149,597,870.691 km (and involve a complex technical definition, as Earth-Sun distance varies slightly with time).

In the 21st century, much of the interest in the transit of Venus of 2012 is its rarity as an astronomical spectacle, the educational opportunities it presents, and the sense of a link with important events in scientific and world history.

Astronomers are now particularly interested in the general principle of planet transits as a way of hunting for and characterizing the nature of planetary systems around other stars. When a planet crosses in front of its parent star, there is a minute dip in the star's apparent brightness. Identifying such dips is a useful method of finding planets orbiting other stars, and studying their properties. The 2012 transit will be observed by the Hinode solar observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope (that will look at the Moon during the Transit), the Venus Express mission currently in orbit around Venus and by a number of observatories on the ground.

You Need To Know About Stock Market Investing - STAKE-YOUR ...

by Larry Sabler

Putting your money in the stock market is a great way to earn more income. The quantity of money you could make might truly shock you. However, for you to make large sums of money through investing, you need to study and learn to make the right choices. Read the following article to obtain some information that is sure to prove very helpful.

Check a broker?s reputation before using them to invest. This little bit of research can save you a lot of money and stress in the long run.

At the very least, your portfolio should generate about 8 percent interest. Ideally, however, you should aim to create a portfolio that generates around 20 percent interest. However, you must remember that no matter what the perceived risk level the stocks in your portfolio can suddenly change, for the good or bad. Making investment decisions is not always easy, but when you use your knowledge with the tools at your disposal, you?ll make some good ones.

Start by putting a small allocation into one company. Do not break the bank when you are starting out. Once you begin to see a profit, you can increase your investment. By investing too much all at once, the chance of you losing out on large amounts of money increases.

If you are a beginner at investing in stocks, be aware that success does not always happen overnight. Often, it takes a long time for a company to grow and become successful, and lots of people give up along the way. When you get involved with investing, patience is going to have to be something you?re good at managing.

Don?t write off a certain stock just because it seems too expensive at the moment. One definite rule of math that you cannot ignore is that your return is lower depending on how much more you put into an asset, compared to how much you are earning. A stock that seems too expensive might become a great deal in a few weeks only, which is why you have to be patient.

Once you have narrowed down your choices of stocks, you should invest no more than 10 percent of your money into a single option. This will greatly reduce your losses should the stock rapidly decline in the future.

Don?t make an attempt to time markets. Historical return tracking has shown that the most profitable results come from methodical investments on a regular basis over time. Figure out how much of your monthly income you are comfortable investing. Develop the habit of regularly investing your money in the market.

As we mentioned before, a possible way to make some extra money is to earn it in the stock market. The more you know about the stock market, the more you will be able to earn. Take the information included in this article to heart, and you will be a professional in the stock market world in no time!

Alabama edges Southern California for NCAA women's title

FRANKLIN, Tenn. ? As Alabama coach Mic Potter stood on the 18th green at Vanderbilt Legends Club's North Course, Southern California coach Andrea L. Gaston walked over and put her arm around the newly minted national champion.

"How many years?" Gaston asked.

"I think it's 29 but I'm not going to count them, either," Potter said. "It just goes to show, if you stick around long enough ?"

In Potter's case, it took 29 years to win his first national title. The Crimson Tide hung on Friday for a one-stroke victory over Southern Cal at the NCAA Championships.

The national title is the third this year for the Tide, along with football and women's gymnastics.

Alabama finished 19 over to USC's 20 over for the tournament. Alabama was 6 over in the final round to USC's 5 over. Crimson Tide senior Brooke Pancake sank a 4-foot par putt on the 18th hole to give Alabama the win.

LSU (+21) came in third place, followed by Virginia (+23) and South Carolina (+24). Virginia lost five strokes on the first day after Elizabeth Brightwell put down the wrong score.

"This means so much to (Potter). I can't explain to you guys ? he has been so close so many times. I'm so honored I got to be on the team that did it for him," said Pancake, a Chattanooga native and four-time Tennessee high school champion who is on the U.S. Curtis Cup team. "For him to have hugged me with tears in his eyes afterwards, it was incredible."

Alabama appeared to have the tournament in hand with two groups remaining on the 18th hole and a four-stroke lead. But Alabama's Jennifer Kirby double-bogeyed the hole and USC's Inah Park birdied it.

It set the stage for Pancake. The senior laid up on her second shot, but missed it into the trees. She then struck the ball 60 feet long of the hole on her approach and had a lengthy putt for birdie. She missed it by 4 feet then sank the clincher.

"When I was standing over (the putt), I kind of had the feeling of 'This is my moment,' " Pancake said. "I've put four years into it, and I can't think of a better way to finish my senior year."

Pancake shot 1-over 73 Friday to finish second in the individual standings to Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil.

The sophomore from Thailand had quite the finishing kick to win the individual competition.

She birdied two of her last three holes to shoot a 2-under 70 and finish 6 under for the tournament. Pancake was four shots back.

"It kind of worked out that I got to start on hole No. 10, and I had seven, eight and nine to finish the round," Jao-Javanil said. "I think that helped because those last three holes were easier than finishing at 15, 17 and 18."

She wrapped up the title with a flourish on another tap-in birdie on the par-5 ninth and soon started getting tweets of congratulations from Oklahoma's football players.

"It's really special," Jao-Javanil said. "I mean because I feel like over here in the U.S. football is a really big sport. To get recognition from them ? we're like the women's golf team."

The 12 Best Moments from Mexico's Least Subtle Monster Movie

Lucha libre is for people bored of the WWE's plodding realism. American wrestling is to lucha libre as American football is to real football: It has far bigger but wimpier men who need to stop every 30 seconds for a bit of a rest. North America split the superheroic fantasy into two wrestling federations: The U.S. got inhuman musculature and the ability to monologue mid-combat, while Mexico took the masks, capes and nonstop ass-kicking. A good lucha fight looks like two men who were swallowed by a giant invisible break-dancing washing machine are blaming each other to death. When you play a lucha DVD, the fighters go through more revolutions than the disc.

And I'm Cracked's official luchador.

Mask by Kink Engineering Lucha Latex Libra [NSFW], photo by Paul Hillier
Cracked doesn't actually know yet, but I'm fairly sure they won't challenge anyone who looks like this.

Lucha movies feature battles against Spanish-speaking moon Nazis, Atlanteans and evil wrestlers, and that was all in one movie. One movie that wasn't as crazy as the one we're about to tackle. Lucha movies handle threats to the world with all the wonder of a child's imagination and a slightly smaller budget. And one of the craziest and cheapest movies was Santo el Enmascarado de Plata y Blue Demon Contra Los Monstruos.

The title is that long because it's also the entire script.

You'll notice it's Santo y Blue Demon Contra LOS Monstruos. Not UNO Monstruo, or DOS Monstruos, but LOS Monstruos, and they're not kidding. This movie is nothing but an evil scientist trawling up new monsters for Santo to punch and Santo punching them. And neither side disappoints.

El Santo

The greatest luchador (and therefore person) in history was El Santo, the silver-masked saint, who makes the Rock and John Cena look like one-hit wonders. He wrestled for four decades and kicked ass for all of them, and in accordance with lucha honor, he never took off his mask.

... ever.

The only real thing in any of his 52 movies is hordes of screaming fans mobbing him. He has more footage of people deeply loving him than Ron Jeremy. In over 40 years of public appearances, Santo only appeared without his mask once, a year after retirement, to say goodbye to his fans a week before dying of a heart attack while performing in mask. They buried him in that mask so that St. Peter would know who was coming and get the hell out of the way.

Evil Scientist

In lucha, evil scientists aren't so much characters as vital production equipment, like cameramen and mask polish. About half of all non-wrestlers are scientists. The only reason they don't have Mexican moon colonies, the only place where luchadores could leap even higher, is the law of conservation of lucha science, which states that every good scientist must be canceled out by an evil one.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor
They use burning torches in the middle of the day because tradition, and because filming at night is hard.

A torch-wielding hunchbacked midget steals an evil scientist's corpse and reanimates it with electricity. That's how much ass lucha kicks -- they've stolen and inverted-body-slammed the plot of Frankenstein, and the main villain isn't even alive yet. He seems to have set up shop in a '60s Batcave built inside an even '60s-er Star Trek cave to save money. That may explain why there's a giant-brained alien stumbling around, because the movie never does.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor
If you saw an open-skulled Easter Island head stumbling around, you'd think it was important. In lucha libre, it's Martes.

The evil scientist spends the first half of the movie assembling a team of monsters and the second half bouncing them back and forth against Santo like the world's most extreme Ping-Pong balls.

Evil Blue Demon

The Blue Demon is Santo's best friend, despite their trying to kill each other in a sinking Atlantis in a previous movie. Because when you do something that cool, you need an excuse to keep bringing it up. He's another real-life superstar luchador and cinematic crime-fighter, a sentence that kicks the shit out of every other CV up to and including "I am the Lord your God." The Blue Demon spends his first few minutes of screen time casually beating people up before retiring in the world's most badass turtleneck to agree that an evil scientist corpse going missing sounds like trouble.

Now in Tecnico-color!

Blue Demon uses his sports car to trail the midget, and I'm going to stop typing for a minute to laugh at that sentence, before infiltrating the evil scientist's castle/cave single-handedly. But because it's the start of the movie, that doesn't work (Santo will have much better luck in exactly 70 minutes). The recently reanimated scientist uses an incredible machine to create a perfect evil duplicate of Blue Demon and then promptly forgets about it. Because once you've cloned the second most powerful hero in the world, who can possibly stop you?

The Mummy

The mummy is stolen from a museum by Evil Blue Demon and the scientist's reanimated murderer squad. Which raises the question of why you need a mummy if you can already resurrect corpses -- surely it's just a weaker body with most of its guts removed? And this is the one moment where the wrestler-vs.-monster movie makes a stand for realism.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor
And like anyone bringing "realism" into action movies, he's pathetic and weak.

The mummy stumbles into each fight like he's just been woken up after four thousand years, which is in fact the case, and strikes with the fury of a dessicated corpse. His only combat advantage is that he's already covered in bandages for the fearsome ass-kicking he takes in every scene. He's only in the movie because toilet paper is the world's cheapest special effect. For a movie so determined to bring in Los Monstruos, it's even more determined to show why they'd objectively suck. If the writers were still around, we'd offer them jobs at Cracked.

El Vampiro

El Vampiro is so cheap that they don't even call him Dracula, despite Dracula being in the public domain and actually free. This may be because El Ballerina would have been more effective and physically intimidating. El Vampiro pre-empts Twilight by 40 years by being even more conflicted about his need for female blood, because it's screamingly clear that's the only biological reason he goes anywhere near women.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor
JAZZ HANDS OF THE UNDEAD!

He's so excited to be in a movie that he leaps to his death every single time the camera turns to him. This is not an exaggeration. Roofs, cliffs, low hills ... as soon as he's in the shot, he slow-motions right over the lens with nothing cushioning his fall but his dreams of fame and fortune. Which are about as well-developed as his aerodynamism. He's the sort of vampire who will try the "hide behind his cloak" move in broad daylight in the middle of an open square. He's actually beaten up by Santo's girlfriend the one time he gets her alone.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor
Seen here losing a fight to an unconscious damsel and the foreground.

So obviously this is the guy they send to take on Santo in a wrestling match. Because after failing to take a wrestler by surprise as a team, twice, your next strategy is to attack him in his strongest arena by sending a vampire under stage lights. It's the Jungian ideal of a doomed match-up: lucha beats everything, and everything beats jazz hands.

La Mujer de Vampiro

A couple of women bitten by the vampire become lady vampires, and in possibly the most fabulous example of sexism ever filmed, the male vampire goes with the full mid-European cloak, top hat and string tie, while the women skip straight to underwear. And he's still not interested.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor

The female vampires are lingerie models with false teeth, and the company spent way more on the lingerie than the teeth. And, honestly, I think the women brought their own lingerie. They look less like undead temptresses than drunk women too old to be trick-or-treating. Since El Vampiro has less interest in women than a volunteer prostate doctor at a lumberjack camp, las mujeres are free to do whatever they want. And like all women in '60s Mexico, what they want to do is Santo.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor

The first vampirette's first action on waking into a new life of bloodthirsty horror is appearing in Santo's car, in lingerie. Santo's first and only thought on seeing a semi-naked woman waiting for him is "This must be for me!" and he was so famous that even in real life he would have been right. Unfortunately, her plan is to seduce Santo into a secluded grove for a fight against Los Monstruos, which works out exactly how it did the last three times they tried ramming his feet with their faces. One of those times was in this exact same grove, as Cinematografica Sotomayor clearly couldn't afford the gas to drive the silver Santomobile to another location.

Cinematogr?fica Sotomayor
But when you're doing flying slams off a car like that, anywhere is a good spot.

Knocking the Wind Out of U.S. Energy Options

05/25/2012
Elliott Negin,?Director of News & Commentary, Union of Concerned Scientists

Unless Congress acts soon, the wind industry will have to trim its sails--and its workforce.

An essential federal tax break for the fledgling industry, scheduled to expire at the end of the year, has become a victim of Washington gridlock. President Obama was in Newton, Iowa, yesterday at TPI Composites, a leading wind blade manufacturer, to again ask Congress to extend the production tax credit, which provides a credit of 2.2 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by wind turbines--as well as geothermal, biomass and underwater turbines--for the first 10 years of production.

The president also urged Congress to expand a 30 percent tax credit instituted in 2009 for investments in companies manufacturing renewable energy components. The package, called the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit, provided $2.3 billion in credits for solar panel parts, "smart" electric meters, fuel cell components and wind turbines.

Over the last decade, wind power has become one of the fastest growing energy sources around the world. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in the United States alone wind generated 120 billion kilowatt hours last year, 20 times more than in 2000 and enough to light up more than 20 million households. That 32 percent average annual growth rate is due to a number of factors, mainly improved technology, state standards requiring utilities to ramp up their reliance on renewables--and the federal production tax credit.

The production tax credit, which debuted in 1992, helps level the playing field between wind and coal and natural gas and is critical for financing new projects. Although most wind power developers don't pay taxes because they're not yet turning a profit, they can raise capital by selling the credits to companies that do.

Unlike a number of fossil-fuel and nuclear-power subsidies that are permanent, the production tax credit has to be renewed by Congress every few years. That puts the relatively new wind industry at a distinct disadvantage, making it difficult to attract investors and plan years in advance. And if Congress doesn't extend the production tax credit this year, the industry will take a significant hit. A December 2011 study by Navigant Consulting estimated that investment in wind projects will drop 65 percent, from $15.6 billion in 2012 to $5.5 billion in 2013; the industry will have to lay off nearly half of its workforce--some 37,000 people--next year; and wind developers will install only 2 gigawatts of wind power in 2013, less than a quarter of what is expected this year. more

Energy Revolution Interruptus

Germany Stalled on the Expressway to a Green Future

By Frank Dohmen, Alexander Jung, Michael Sauga and Andreas Wassermann ?05/23/2012

Germany's energy revolution has hardly begun, but it's already running out of steam. There is a lack of political decisiveness and companies are complaining of a dearth of incentives to invest billions in necessary infrastructure. Progress or no progress, taxpayers continue footing the bill.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), will see federal diversity on display this Wednesday when she hosts Germany's governors for an energy summit in Berlin. She can expect to see 16 governors and hear 16 different opinions -- at the very least.

Each delegation has a different notion of what Germany's energy revolution should look like. The delegation from the northwestern state of Lower Saxony wants to promote offshore wind farms, while the representatives of the southwestern state of Baden-W?rttemberg favor projects that make more sense farther inland. The Bavarians are calling for new gas-fired power plants in the south, while politicians from the northeastern state of Brandenburg are championing the unfettered expansion of the solar industry, which is ailing in the east.

The cacophony reflects the current state of affairs. Things are all over the place in the energy turnaround at the moment, and nothing seems to be working. The key project of the coalition government of Merkel's CDU, its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) is stalling before it has truly begun.

A year ago, the chancellor was still able to fire people's imaginations with her energy plans. "We can be the world's first industrialized country to successfully navigate the transition to the electricity of the future," Merkel said at the time. When she summarilyfired Environment Minister Norbert R?ttgen last Wednesday, she had returned to the harsh light of reality. In a considerable understatement, Merkel admitted that "the implementation of the energy turnaround still requires substantial efforts."

Brandenburg Governor Matthias Platzeck, a member of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), deplores the "intolerable jumble of authority" the federal government is creating during the energy turnaround. His fellow Social Democrat Matthias Machnig, economics minister of the eastern state of Thuringia, compares the "biggest infrastructure project of the postwar era" to a marathon, adding that Germany is "only 50 centimeters past the starting line." And that, says Kurt Beck, the SPD governor of the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, is the federal government's fault. "To this day, there is no clear policy in Berlin," he says. more
