Do salamanders' immune systems hold the key to regeneration?

May 20, 2013 ? Salamanders' immune systems are key to their remarkable ability to regrow limbs, and could also underpin their ability to regenerate spinal cords, brain tissue and even parts of their hearts, scientists have found.

In research published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences researchers from the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) at Monash University found that when immune cells known as macrophages were systemically removed, salamanders lost their ability to regenerate a limb and instead formed scar tissue.

Lead researcher, Dr James Godwin, a Fellow in the laboratory of ARMI Director Professor Nadia Rosenthal, said the findings brought researchers a step closer to understanding what conditions were needed for regeneration.

"Previously, we thought that macrophages were negative for regeneration, and this research shows that that's not the case -- if the macrophages are not present in the early phases of healing, regeneration does not occur," Dr Godwin said.

"Now, we need to find out exactly how these macrophages are contributing to regeneration. Down the road, this could lead to therapies that tweak the human immune system down a more regenerative pathway."

Salamanders deal with injury in a remarkable way. The end result is the complete functional restoration of any tissue, on any part of the body including organs. The regenerated tissue is scar free and almost perfectly replicates the injury site before damage occurred.

"We can look to salamanders as a template of what perfect regeneration looks like," Dr Godwin said.

Aside from "holy grail" applications, such as healing spinal cord and brain injuries, Dr Godwin believes that studying the healing processes of salamanders could lead to new treatments for a number of common conditions, such as heart and liver diseases, which are linked to fibrosis or scarring. Promotion of scar-free healing would also dramatically improve patients' recovery following surgery.

There are indications that there is the capacity for regeneration in a range of animal species, but it has, in most cases been turned off by evolution.

"Some of these regenerative pathways may still be open to us. We may be able to turn up the volume on some of these processes," Dr Godwin said.

"We need to know exactly what salamanders do and how they do it well, so we can reverse-engineer that into human therapies."

Knicks unsure about Stoudemire's role

(AP) ? Amare Stoudemire will go into next season with $45 million left on his contract and no guarantee of a starting job.

He also could remain a reserve who plays restricted minutes.

Searching for ways to improve next season, the New York Knicks could use a reliable second scorer and dependable low-post option. They have no way of knowing if Stoudemire can provide either because of his knees.

"He's a heck of a player and I think we all know that. The question is his health and how much he can play," general manager Glen Grunwald said Tuesday. "So we've got our medical staff and training staff working with him to design an offseason program that will get him to full health, and we hope he'll be able to play significant minutes for us next year. How much that will be, we don't know at this time."

Stoudemire was limited to just 29 games in the regular season and four brief appearances in the postseason because of a pair of knee surgeries.

Following a 54-28 finish and their first playoff series victory since 2000, improvement won't be easy for the Knicks. Their options will be limited by salary cap rules, and it's unclear if they even want to make many changes. Grunwald agreed with players that the best strategy might be giving this season's roster more time together.

"Our focus is to continue to build this core team," Grunwald said in a rare meeting with reporters. "I think some continuity, some familiarization, further growth as individual and as a team, I think that's what we have to do."

That could mean re-signing sixth man J.R. Smith if he becomes a free agent, though Grunwald wouldn't comment on specific plans. He also said 40-year-old Jason Kidd, who has two years left on his deal, gave no indication during his exit meeting that he planned to retire after a dismal postseason.

Grunwald said the Knicks won't be allowed to acquire players in sign-and-trade deals and have only the exception for taxpaying teams, starting at about $3.2 million next season. They won't get much top talent for that, but they would if Stoudemire could come back and play at anywhere near his former All-Star level.

He has to show the Knicks he can be healthy before showing them he deserves to start again.

"I haven't made that decision. I'll have the summer to kind of evaluate where I go with that, but I think first things first, he's got to come back healthy," coach Mike Woodson said. "I mean, that is the major part of this. Our struggles in terms of where we wanted to go this season was the fact that we had the injury with STAT. STAT was ready I thought when he came in, but he got hurt.

"A lot is going to depend on where he is once he steps foot in vet camp in terms of where he is health-wise and minute restrictions, that may be the case. All of that's going to play a major role in STAT in terms of where we go with our ballclub and him playing, because I just don't know at this point."

Stoudemire worked hard last summer following an injury-plagued 2011-12 season, training with Hakeem Olajuwon to add low-post moves. But he had surgery to clean up and remove tissue from his left knee in training camp and was sidelined until New Year's Day. He was playing well in March but then ended up needing the same procedure, called a debridement, on the other knee.

He returned for the second round but was clearly rusty and played just 33 minutes, Woodson hardly using him in the final two games. The Knicks didn't get nearly enough scoring in the paint against Indiana, something a healthy Stoudemire could have changed.

"I think STAT ... could've really helped us in that area because we had developed him over the summer to give us some low scoring, and the fact that he just wasn't, I don't think, where we needed him based on his injuries, that kind of hurt us a little bit," Woodson said, acknowledging the Knicks were a jump-shooting team this season and may have to look at adding someone with a low-post game.

The Knicks gave Stoudemire a five-year deal worth nearly $100 million in 2010, but he's been unable to remain healthy. He and Carmelo Anthony haven't played enough to be comfortable and productive together, and when Stoudemire was sidelined to start the season, Woodson moved Anthony to Stoudemire's power forward spot. Anthony ended up winning his first scoring title and the Knicks their first division title since 1994.

Once Stoudemire returned, he was limited at first to about 20 minutes a game, which was gradually increased to 30 before he was hurt again. Woodson never seemed to consider starting him, even when frontcourt injuries left few other options, and will have to hope Stoudemire can be healthy enough to give him something to think about next season.

"That'll be for us to determine where our roster winds up next year and where everyone else is," Grunwald said. "I thought he had a great role in terms of where Woody put him in to be successful, in terms of coming off the bench as Woody said, and whether that continues next year or not will be determined. But there's no grand plan per se that he'll start or not start. It'll be determined on what Woody decides is best for the team that will give us the best chance to win."

With its ranks deeply divided, the Boy Scouts of America is asking its local leaders from across the country to decide whether its contentious membership policy should be overhauled so that openly gay boys can participate in Scout units.

The proposal to be put before the roughly 1,400 voting members of the BSA's National Council on Thursday, at a meeting in Grapevine, Texas, would retain the Scouts' long-standing ban on gays serving in adult leadership positions.

Nonetheless, some conservatives within and outside the BSA community have denounced the proposal, saying the Scouts' traditions would be undermined by the presence of openly gay youth. There have been warnings of mass defections if the ban is even partially lifted.

From the other flank, gay-rights supporters and some Scout leaders from politically liberal areas have welcomed the proposed change as a positive first step, but are calling on the BSA to go further and lift the ban on gay adults as well.

The Scouts' national spokesman, Deron Smith, said the policy toward gays had become "the most complex and challenging issue" facing the BSA at a time when it is struggling to stem a steady drop in membership.

"Ultimately we can't anticipate how people will vote but we do know that the result will not match everyone's personal preference," Smith said in an email.

In January, the BSA floated a plan to give sponsors of local Scout units the option of admitting gays as both youth members and adult leaders or continuing to exclude them. However, it changed course, in part because of surveys sent out starting in February to members of the Scouting community.

Of the more than 200,000 leaders, parents and youth members who responded, 61 percent supported the current policy of excluding gays, while 34 percent opposed it.

Those findings contrasted with a Washington Post-ABC News national poll earlier this month. It said 63 percent of respondents favored letting openly gay youth be Scouts, and 56 percent favored lifting the ban on gay adults.

Over the past several weeks, numerous public events have been staged by advocacy groups on different sides of the debate.

A group called Scouts for Equality has organized rallies in several cities aimed at urging local BSA councils to support an end to the ban on gay youth. Rallies opposing any easing of the ban, for youth or adults, have been organized by a group called OnMyHonor.net, which claims the pending proposal "requires open homosexuality in the Boy Scouts."

Both groups plan to have their leaders and supporters on hand in Grapevine as the vote takes place.

Among those heading to Grapevine to lobby for an easing of the ban are Tracie Felker and her 16-year-old son, Pascal Tessier, who, though openly gay, is on track to become an Eagle Scout as a member of Boy Scout Troop 52 in Chevy Chase, Md.

"We are absolutely dedicated to restoring integrity to Boy Scouting and reinvigorating the program," Felker said. "That can only be done by removing the stain of discrimination."

Passions also run deep on the other side, as evidenced by a live online event titled "Stand With Scouts Sunday" presented May 5 by the conservative Family Research Council. The council opposes lifting the ban on gay youth, saying such a change "will dramatically alter the culture and moral landscape of America."

Among the participants was Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who lauded the Scouts' tradition of character-building.

"For pop culture to come in and try to tear that up because this happens to be the flavor of the month ... that is just not appropriate," Perry said. "Frankly I hope the American people stand up and say, 'Not on my watch.'"

Also appearing on the webcast was Jeremy Miller, a Scout leader from Ohio who said the proposed change "will open the door to boy-on-boy sexual contact, bullying and older Scouts being predators on younger scouts."

The BSA's national leadership has rejected such warnings as ill-founded. "The BSA makes no connection between the sexual abuse or victimization of a child and homosexuality," a new background document says. "The BSA takes strong exception to this assertion."

Of the more than 100,000 Scouting units in the U.S., 70 percent are chartered by religious institutions. While these sponsors include liberal churches opposed to any ban on gays, some of the largest sponsors are relatively conservative denominations that have supported the broad ban ? notably the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Southern Baptist churches.

Knowing these churches oppose scouting roles for gay adults, the BSA leadership hopes they will be willing to back the easing of the ban on gay youth. As part of this effort, the BSA is emphasizing that sexual conduct by any Scout ? straight or gay ? would be considered unacceptable.

"We are unaware of any major religious chartered organization that believes a youth member simply stating he or she is attracted to the same sex, but not engaging in sexual activity, should make him or her unwelcome in their congregation," the Scouts say in their new background document.

Southern Baptist leaders were outspoken earlier this year in opposing the tentative plan to let Scout units decide for themselves if they wanted to accept gays as adult leaders.

Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee, said the new proposal "is more acceptable to those who hold a biblical form of morality," but he nonetheless favors its defeat.

"A No vote keeps the current policy in place, an outcome we would overwhelmingly support," Page told Baptist Press, the SBC's official news agency.

Baptist Press reported that the Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., was considering ending a nearly 75-year sponsorship of a Boy Scout troop if the policy change prevails. The church's senior pastor, Ernest Easley, echoed warnings from other Southern Baptist leaders that any BSA accommodation of gays might prompt defections and trigger an expansion of the SBC's own youth group for boys, the Royal Ambassadors. According to BSA figures, Baptist churches sponsor Scout units with about 108,000 youth members.

Leaders of some smaller conservative denominations ? including the Assemblies of God and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod ? have signed a statement opposing the proposal to accept gay youth.

Some larger sponsors have either endorsed the proposal, or ? in the case of the United Methodist Church and Catholic Church ? declined to specify a position. The National Catholic Committee on Scouting issued a statement describing the membership debate as "difficult and sensitive" but stopping short of any explicit recommendation for how Catholic delegates to the BSA meeting should vote.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in April that it supports the new proposal, saying the BSA made a good-faith effort to address a complex issue. The Mormons sponsor more Scout units than any other organization, serving about 430,000 of the 2.6 million youth in Scouting.

The United Methodists are the second-largest sponsor, serving about 363,000 youth members; the Catholic Church is No. 3, with a youth membership of about 273,000.

Several regional Scout councils already have declared their position on the membership proposal.

In Tennessee, the Nashville-based Middle Tennessee Council and Jackson-based West Tennessee Area Council said they oppose the proposed change and support the current broad ban on gay youth and adults.

"We are continuing to uphold the standards, beliefs and traditions Scouting has held for over 100 years," said Lee Beaman, board president of the Middle Tennessee Council, which says it serves 35,000 youth and adults.

The day after that announcement, Bill Moser, a longtime Scout leader in Clarksville, Tenn., announced his resignation, saying he couldn't support a policy that would force openly gay youth out of Scouting when they turned 18.

The Greater New York Councils, which serve about 43,000 Scouts in New York City, is supporting the proposal to accept gay youths, calling it "a positive step forward." It is among the councils urging the Scouts to also accept gays as adult leaders.

The Los Angeles Area Council said it follows a nondiscrimination policy that extends to sexual orientation and it proposed that the BSA adopt a similar policy nationwide, opening its ranks to openly gay adults as well as youth.

However, the BSA leadership says no such alternative proposals will be put to a vote at the Grapevine meeting ? only the single proposal to lift the ban on gay youth.

If the proposal is approved, the new policy would take effect on Jan. 1, 2014. A task force already has been created to oversee its implementation.

Body mass index of low income African-Americans linked to proximity of fast food restaurants

May 16, 2013 ? African-American adults living closer to a fast food restaurant had a higher body mass index (BMI) than those who lived further away from fast food, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and this association was particularly strong among those with a lower income.

A new study published online in the American Journal of Public Health indicates higher BMI associates with residential proximity to a fast food restaurant, and among lower-income African-Americans, the density, or number, of fast food restaurants within two miles of the home.

The study was led by Lorraine Reitzel, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Health Disparities Research at MD Anderson. Data was collected from a large sample of more than 1,400 black adult participants from the Project CHURCH research study, a collaboration between MD Anderson and Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston -- one of the largest Methodist churches in the United States.

"According to prior research, African-Americans, particularly women, have higher rates of obesity than other ethnic groups, and the gap is growing," said Reitzel. "The results of this study add to the literature indicating that a person's neighborhood environment and the foods that they're exposed to can contribute to a higher BMI."

Reitzel said that this is an important population group for researchers to examine because of the health consequences that are associated with obesity among African-Americans including diabetes, cancer and heart disease. "We need to find the relationships and triggers that relate to this population's BMI, as they're at the greatest risk for becoming obese and developing associated health problems," said Reitzel. "Such information can help inform policies and interventions to prevent health disparities."

In this study, Reitzel and her team examined two different food environment variables and their associations with BMI: proximity and density of fast food restaurants, which were based on each participant's geocoded residential address. The study participants were also broken into two income groups; those making less than $40,000 a year and those making $40,000 or more a year. "We found no previous research literature that considered household income when investigating whether there were associations between fast food availability and BMI," said Reitzel.

The study controlled for factors that may influence a person's BMI including gender, age, physical activity, individual household income, median neighborhood income, education, partner status, employment status and residential tenure. Sedentary behaviors, including the amount of time the participant spent watching television, were considered. Researchers also controlled for the presence of children in the home because of its known relation with physical activity rates.

Researchers examined the density of fast food restaurants within a half mile, one mile, two miles and five miles around each participant's home.

On average there were 2.5 fast food restaurants within a half mile, 4.5 within a mile, 11.4 within 2 miles and 71.3 within 5 miles of participants' homes. "We found a significant relationship between the number of fast food restaurants and BMI for within a half-mile, one-mile and two-miles of the home, but only among lower-income study participants," said Reitzel. The data showed the greater the density, the higher the BMI. There was no significant association for the five-mile area.

When examining proximity -- the distance in miles from each participant's home to the closest restaurant -- the study found that closer proximity was associated with a higher BMI. In fact, although results indicate that the relationship between a higher BMI and proximity was stronger for those of lower income, it was still significant in the group with the higher incomes. The data also showed that every additional mile participants' lived from the closest fast food restaurant was associated with a 2.4 percent lower BMI.

"There's something about living close to a fast food restaurant that's associated with a higher BMI," said Reitzel. She said that there may be some behavioral economics involved in the decision to choose fast food over a healthier choice. "Fast food is specifically designed to be affordable, appealing and convenient. People are pressed for time, and they behave in such a way that will cost them the least amount of time to get things done, and this may extend to their food choices."

Reitzel also said that people of lower income may have less access to transportation, so having a high density of fast food restaurants around the home makes eating fast food easier. "This may also be why there were significant associations for density and BMI within 2 miles of the home, which is an easily walkable distance, but not 5 miles of the home." Reitzel said in some neighborhoods, there are fewer roads to travel and people pass by the same fast food restaurants on the way in and out of the neighborhood every day. "Those visual cues may prompt people to choose fast food even when it was not the original intent."

Co-authors with Reitzel are Ellen K. Cromley, Ph.D., of The University of Connecticut School of Medicine; Larkin L. Strong, Ph.D., David W. Wetter, Ph.D., Lorna H. McNeill, Ph.D. and Seann D. Regan, all of MD Anderson's Department of Health Disparities Research; and Nga Nguyen of MD Anderson's Department of Biostatistics.

Did Diddy sign on with 'Downton Abbey'?

TV

Sean "Diddy" Combs pulled a nice promo prank on his over 8-million Twitter followers Wednesday when he tweeted, "MY BIG NEWS: So happy to announce that Im a series regular on DOWNTON ABBEY-my favorite show+i'll be debuting a sneak peek tonight 12am PST!"

The Twitterverse, naturally, went nuts. "Downton Abbey" did recently announce the casting of its first recurring black actor (that would be actor Gary Carr) -- but for a few minutes there it seemed they might be expanding the diversity of the cast.

Alas, 'tis not so. Not officially so, anyway.

"It's not true," PBS spokeswoman Carrie Johnson told Reuters in an email.

(Note: Video is R-rated for language.)

But all was revealed, as promised, at midnight: It's a Funny or Die viral video (or at least one they hope will go viral), and it is pretty darn funny. Combs starts out the clip sitting behind a desk and calling the show "Downtown Abbey" repeatedly, before finally correcting himself, and saying he's actually the first black cast member of the show, having been there all along.

Then, with some clever editing techniques, he turns up in clips from earlier "Abbey" episodes, announcing himself as "Lord Wolcott, the new owner of Downtown Abbey."

After a few exchanges with the regular cast members, "Wolcott" generously says, "Everybody just go on like I'm not here," which of course they do. Later on when Thomas makes a move on him, he rejects him firmly -- admitting he already loves Sybil and Mary and Mrs. Patmore ... among others. But then he seems to have second thoughts: He does love Thomas. "I love everybody!"

But power quickly goes to his head: "I am Lord of this godforsaken manor and all who oppose me will perish!"

Make sure to check out all of the antics in the video!

There's 320 Tons of Junk in the Trunk of this Russian Dumper

With 11 open-pit facilities producing over 45 million tons of coal annually, the Kuzbassrazrezugol (KRU) mining company isn't just the biggest company in the Russian Federation, it's the single largest coal exporter on the planet. And to empty its Bachatsky open-pit coal mine?one of the largest such mines in the region, producing 8.7 million tons annually?as efficiently as possible, KRU relies on the world's largest dump truck: the Belaz series 7560.

Clue to why women live longer

Women live longer than men partly because their immune systems age more slowly, a study suggests.

As the body's defences weaken over time, men's increased susceptibility to disease shortens their lifespans, say Japanese scientists.

Tests of immune function could give an indication of true biological age, they report in Immunity & Ageing journal.

The immune system protects the body from infection and cancer, but causes disease when not properly regulated.

The Japanese study set out to investigate the controversial question of whether age-related changes in the immune system could be responsible for the difference in average life expectancy between men and women.

Prof Katsuiku Hirokawa of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and colleagues analysed blood samples from 356 healthy men and women aged between 20 and 90.

They measured levels of white blood cells and molecules called cytokines which interact with cells of the immune system to regulate the body's response to disease.

It's likely that the slower ageing in the immune system of women reflects a generally slower rate of intrinsic ageing, rather than that the immune system itself is setting the pace?

End Quote Prof Tom Kirkwood University of Newcastle upon Tyne

In both sexes, the number of white blood cells per person declined with age as expected from previous studies.

However, closer examination revealed differences between men and women in two key components of the immune system - T-cells, which protect the body from infection, and B-cells, which secrete antibodies.

The rate of decline of most T-cell and B-cell lymphocytes was faster in men, while men also showed a more rapid age-related decline in two cytokines.

Two specific types of immune system cell that attack invaders - CD4 T-cells and natural killer cells - increased in number with age, with a higher rate of increase in women than in men.

The researchers believe a person's immunological parameters could provide an indication of their true biological age.

"Age-related changes in various immunological parameters differ between men and women," Prof Hirokawa and colleagues report in the online journal Immunity & Ageing.

"Our findings indicate that the slower rate of decline in these immunological parameters in women than that in men is consistent with the fact that women live longer than do men."

Life expectancy

  • Life expectancy in the UK is 79 years for men and 82 for women
  • In Japan, the gap is wider, with women living to 85.5 on average
  • Source: World Health Organization

Commenting on the study, Prof Tom Kirkwood of the Institute of Ageing and Health at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, said the findings, while valuable, were not fundamentally surprising.

"It's likely that the slower ageing in the immune system of women reflects a generally slower rate of intrinsic ageing, rather than that the immune system itself is setting the pace," he told BBC News.

Dr Donald Palmer, senior lecturer in immunology at the Royal Veterinary College, said studies in mice had shown similar results.

Planting a Family Garden: Small Gardens for Smaller Yards | Marie ...

Spring is here, and for my family, that means starting our small garden. We have a very small yard so a small garden works best for us. Regardless of the yard size, small gardens can be great for anyone because they are a lot less work than giant vegetable gardens. A family garden can be a project for everyone in the family to help plan, plant, care for, harvest and enjoy.

??????????Small Family Garden

  • Planning- Think about the foods you like to eat that are relatively easy to grow. Tomatoes, lettuce mixes, zucchini, peppers, and green beans are some of our family favorites. We also plant fresh herbs like basil, Italian parsley, and chives. Plan how many plants you will want of each and start with seeds in your home, or buy the seedling plants at the garden center. The garden center is a great place to ask questions about the yield of various plant types, watering and feeding. Let the kids pick out a favorite veggie that will be their plant.
  • Planting- The photos show our small ?square foot gardening.? Each type of plant has one or two squares. For our tomatoes, we use a hanging tomato planter to save on space. You also can put all your herbs in one large pot to save space. Younger kids can plant within the family garden or use a container to plant their own mini garden.
  • Caring- The great thing about small gardens is that they are pretty easy to care for; there isn?t much weeding to be done. Don?t forget to water daily, watch for pests and protect your crops. We find that a small fence around our little family garden really helps keep rabbits and squirrels out.
  • Harvesting- This is the really fun part! Our entire family gets excited to see what we have grown, and to finally be able to pick it off the plant and eat it! Lettuce is one of our favorites because it just keeps growing! ?We only take what we need for our salad with dinner that night. Kids really love picking the ripe vegetables and it can help picky eaters expand their palates.
  • Enjoying- Use your freshly grown items regularly throughout the season. If you have a bumper crop of a certain item you can share with neighbors and friends, or find recipes like tomato sauce or pickles that can be frozen.

Getting the whole family involved in our garden gets us all outside and working together as a team. The cost to start your garden is minimal and the results are a big payout for your family.

Do you have a small garden? What is your favorite thing to grow in it?

Lawmaker trips over this week's Washington scandals

Maryland Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

With the rumbling of so much scandal ripping through Washington this week?woeful stories about Benghazi, the DOJ subpoena of journalists' phone records and the IRS unfairly targeting conservative groups?it's hard to keep track of all the terrible.

Even lawmakers sometimes struggle

At Rep. Steny Hoyer's weekly meeting with reporters Tuesday, the Maryland Democrat was asked if he was concerned about the DOJ seizing phone records from Associated Press journalists working in the House press gallery in the capitol building.

Hoyer's answer was well-delivered: Articulate, clear, firm and precise.

One problem: He responded to the wrong scandal.

"The IRS activity was inappropriate, inconsistent with our policies and practices as a country, very concerning, needs to be reviewed carefully," Hoyer, one of the top-ranking House Democrats, said in response to a question from Fox News' Chad Pergram about the DOJ. "We need to ensure that this does not happen again and we need to find out how long it continued, when it was stopped. It is my understanding?there was a front-page story on this at the [Washington] Post?it's my understanding that [IRS official] Lois Lerner, who was apparently overseeing this, at some point in time found out about this and said..."

When Hoyer named Lerner, Pergram interrupted.

"We're talking about two things," Pergram, who apparently had not heard the first mention of the IRS, said from across the table, "You said Lois Lerner and the IRS."

Another reporter sitting closer to Hoyer, Public Radio International's Todd Zwillich, learned over and said softly, "He's talking about the AP story."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, excuse me," Hoyer said, pausing briefly. "Whatever happened, we need to find out why it happened. But clearly it should not have happened. I don't know enough about whether there was a warrant sought."

Boom. He nailed it!

But Hoyer wasn't finished.

"I don't know fully the rationalization or justification that was being used, but the president's statement that it was outrageous, that there was no place for it and that they have to be held fully accountable is a statement in which I agree," Hoyer went on to say.

The only problem is that Obama didn't comment about the DOJ story. And he certainly didn't call it "outrageous." In fact, the White House has declined to say much of anything about the DOJ investigation. Was he talking about the IRS story again? Yup.

Hoyer continued: "He then points out in another statement which with I agree: 'I can tell you that if you've got the IRS operating in anything less...'" Hoyer said, his voice trailing off. "Oh I keep going IRS. I'm really fired up on the IRS."

Hoyer regrouped, and returned back to his answer about the DOJ.

"I don't have the president's statement on that, but I'm sure the president's statement on that was very much like that regarding the IRS," he said. (It wasn't.) "Neither of the activities is justifiable, outside the ambit in the case of the AP of having a legal mechanism where an interception of communications would have been warranted or justified by a court."

Now for the home-stretch. Almost there!

"The House needs to look at this," Hoyer continued. "We need to find out exactly what happened and we need to make sure?that's why I'm confusing the two?that those folks who were involved in this are held accountable if in fact there was wrongdoing. Clearly we should not have either House lines, but particular the lines of the Fourth Estate?the press?subject to being intercepted without knowledge and without court oversight."

And with that, he moved on to other questions.

Will Smith sets sights on 'Wild Bunch' reboot at Warner Bros.

By Jeff Sneider

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Will Smith is in talks to star in and produce Warner Bros.' reboot of Sam Peckinpah's classic 1969 Western "The Wild Bunch," individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

Smith would produce through his Overbrook Entertainment banner along with Jerry Weintraub, who recently worked with Smith on "The Karate Kid" remake.

The original "Wild Bunch" followed a group of aging outlaws that plan one last score on the Texas-Mexico border as the traditional American West changes around them in 1913.

A modern remake involving cartels south of the border, the "Wild Bunch" reboot is expected to follow a disgraced D.E.A. agent who assembles a team to go after a Mexican drug lord and his fortune.

Warner Bros. and Weintraub have been looking to reboot the property for years. David Ayer was hired to write a script and most recently, Tony Scott was developing the project with Oscar winner Brian Helgeland ("L.A. Confidential"), who wrote about half of the screenplay before Scott died last year.

The studio and producing team are currently looking to hire a new writer for the project, which provides the opportunity to surround Smith with a strong ensemble. The original "Wild Bunch" starred William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien, Warren Oates, Jaime Sanchez and Ben Johnson.

Smith has never done a proper Western before, though he was sought to star in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and Kathryn Bigelow's since-abandoned "Triple Frontier." WB's 1999 movie "Wild Wild West" was set in the Old West but the material was played for laughs.

Smith will soon be seen alongside his son Jaden Smith in M. Night Shyamalan's action-adventure movie "After Earth," which Sony opens May 31. He recently filmed a small but key role in Akiva Goldsman's directorial debut "Winter's Tale" and he's set to star in WB's con artist tale "Focus." After that, the only firm starring vehicle on his slate is Ed Zwick's Hurricane Katrina drama "The American Can."

Overbrook produced "After Earth" and it is also producing Sony's remake of the beloved musical "Annie," which will star Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx.

Smith is represented by CAA.

Notion Ink Adam II teased at India's National Technology Awards, reportedly priced at $218

Notion Ink Adam II teased at India's National Technology Awards, reportedly priced at $218

Remember the Notion Ink Adam? We'll forgive you if you don't -- the device fell a bit short of expectations, and news of its successor has been scarce. Save for a few teasing tweets, Notion Ink has kept the project pretty close to its chest. That changed this weekend, however, when the tablet's price and specifications were announced at India's National Technology Awards. According to a press release (after the break) and a pamphlet reportedly given to attendees, the Adam II will sell for 12,000 Indian Rupees (about $217) later this year, packing in a 1.5 Ghz Dual-Core ARM Cortex CPU, twin 2MP cameras, 1GB RAM and up to 10 hours of battery life.

The tablet also boasts a secondary screen, albeit a small one: a monochrome ticker that displays Android notifications on the Adam's book-like spine. HDMI, headphone and a micro USB ports crowd the device's adjacent edges, which wrap around a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display -- a concession that was apparently made to increase longevity. Specific and international availability was sadly left out of the announcements, but its nice to finally see this project gain some steam.

Sierra Leone opposition politician released

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) ? Authorities have released a prominent opposition politician in Sierra Leone who was accused of making statements that could undermine state security.

Charles Francis Margai had been detained after speaking about a land dispute he has with Sierra Leone's first lady. Margai said he would fight for his land and said he would be backed by militia forces loyal to him.

His lawyer, Robert Kowa, said Monday that Margai has been released on bail without charge though he must report to police every other day.

Margai was among the candidates who contested the presidential election in 2012 election and lost to incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma. Margai's party does not hold a seat in parliament.

Sierra Leone is still recovering from a brutal 10-year civil war that ended in 2002.

Why Mercury is a hard orange, not a soft peach

Astrophile is our weekly column on curious cosmic objects, from the solar system to the far reaches of the multiverse

Object: Mercury-like planets
Composition: Large, iron-rich cores
Position in solar system: Closest to their stars

If our solar system's hellishly hot, innermost planet Mercury were an orange, its enormous, iron-rich core would be the juicy, fruity bit, leaving just the thin rind for the crust and mantle. This has puzzled astronomers for decades, as conventional planetary formation models cannot produce such a relatively large core. Earth and the other terrestrial planets, by contrast, have cores more like the pit of a peach ? giving them a lower density overall.

Astronomers speculated that Mercury could have suffered a massive impact that stripped away a silicate mantle. Alternatively, its outer layers could have evaporated away from the heat of the sun. But in the last few years, NASA's Messenger probe has found volatile elements like potassium in the planet's crust. If it had suffered either the trauma of an impact or evaporation, those elements should not have survived and persisted ? according to most models.

In the meantime, the mystery has only become more pressing. Recent observations of extrasolar planets suggest that Mercury's structure might not be unique: the two smallest exoplanets whose densities are known, Kepler-10b and Corot-7bMovie Camera, are also far denser than expected, suggesting they share Mercury's orange-like structure. And these planets, like Mercury, also sit close to their sun. Now, a new theory may explain the whole coterie in one fell swoop. The culprit? The heat provided by starlight.

Hot side

When gas molecules collide with a hot dust grain, they pick up heat, bouncing off faster than they approached. This gives the grain a little shove. Gerard Wurm of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany and colleagues calculated how this photophoretic force would affect dust grains swirling around a star.

Because metallic grains conduct heat, they are evenly heated throughout. As a result, they will be shoved from all sides and so will not move far from the star, the team found. Insulating grains, however, such as less-dense silicates, have a hot, sun-facing side, where departing gas molecules will give a bigger shove than those on the cold side.

Wurm's team says the effect of this over time will be to sort the grains in a nascent solar system, with metals left close to the star, and less dense particles pushed further out. Planets eventually form from these grains, so this process could explain why inner planets like Mercury, Kepler-10b and Corot-7b, are so dense.

"I think it all fits together logically," Wurm says. "You have metal-rich objects closer to the star, because you can't push them. The further you go out in a planetary system, the less metal you have to build planets."

The research will appear in The Astrophysical Journal.

Tower drop

Photophoresis is not a new idea. A century ago, physicists who worked with vacuum chambers worried about it constantly. "This was in every experiment because the [vacuum] pumps were so bad," says Wurm. The force is only significant in imperfect vacuum conditions, where there's a little bit of gas but not too much. As pumps improved, physicists began to leave photophoresis out of their calculations. "It kind of vanished for 100 years," says Wurm.

Larry Nittler of the Carnegie Instition of Washington likes the idea of linking photophoresis to the Mercury mystery, but he cautions that Wurm's team's theory on planet formation is not conclusive, and he stresses that the rival mantle-stripping explanation is not dead.

Future work could include carrying out computer simulations of our solar system that take photophoresis into account and comparing the predicted composition with measurements of Mercury taken by the Messenger probe, Nittler suggests.

Wurm is actually planning a cruder simulation ? run in the real world, not on a computer. He hopes to drop a sealed capsule containing metals and dust from a 110-meter tower in Bremen, Germany, to simulate the weightlessness of space. He will zap the falling capsule with an infrared laser, and check whether the dust and metals start to separate as he predicts.

In the meantime, you could say it's oranges 1, peaches 0.
