Afghan massacre suspect identified, due at Kansas base

TACOMA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The soldier implicated in the massacre of 16 villagers in Afghanistan this week, an incident that sent American-Afghan relations into a tailspin, is U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, a U.S. official said on Friday.

The official declined to provide additional details about Bales, who is suspected of walking off his base in southern Afghanistan on Sunday and gunning down the 16 villagers, including nine children and three women.

Earlier, the soldier's attorney said the staff sergeant was scheduled to arrive on Friday at the Fort Leavenworth army base in Kansas, where he will be held in maximum security. Fort Leavenworth has the U.S. Defense Department's only maximum-security facility.

The 38-year-old soldier, whose military unit is based south of Tacoma, Washington, had been held in Kuwait after he was flown out of Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Bales has not yet been charged in the incident. U.S. military officials have said they would not publicly identify the soldier until he is charged.

"I would assume he'll be charged pretty fast," said Jeffrey Lustick, a defense attorney and former Air Force military prosecutor and defense attorney in Bellingham, Washington.

The soldier is expected to face justice under U.S. military rules, but it is not clear where any trial would take place.

Photos of a soldier identified as Bales, wearing camouflage and battle gear, appeared in an article about training for soldiers headed for Afghanistan on a web publication linked to Fort Irwin, a California military base. According to the website, the photos were taken in August.

Seattle attorney John Henry Browne told Reuters that post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, would likely be part of the defense of the four-tour veteran.

"It is commonly used in military defense," he said, calling it a mitigating factor. Browne has said the soldier was unhappy about returning to combat after being wounded twice in Iraq.

He added on Friday that the man had witnessed a serious injury to a comrade the day before the massacre in the southern province of Kandahar on Sunday.

"One leg was blown off," Browne said, and the sergeant was nearby. Browne or a colleague from the defense team plan to meet the sergeant next week, he said.

It is believed that the soldier walked off the Belandai base in the middle of the night last Sunday and began shooting Afghan villagers in two nearby villages, according to a congressional source.

The shooting of villagers has harmed relations between Afghanistan and the United States. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has accused the Pentagon of failing to fully cooperate with an investigation into the killings.

Browne told CNN that he had spoken with his client earlier in the morning, and in the short conversation the soldier "sounded distant and kind of like a deer in the headlights, but okay."

At a news conference on Thursday, Browne described his client as "an exemplary soldier" who was upset at having to do a fourth tour of duty in a war zone and was likely suffering from stress after seeing colleagues wounded.

An unnamed U.S. official had told The New York Times the killings were a result of "a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues ? he just snapped."

But Browne said on CNN that marital problems were "totally bogus." He said his client has a "very strong marriage and, frankly, we're all taking offense at that."

Karzai met with village elders and families of victims of the shootings on Friday and appeared to back their belief that a single gunman could not have killed so many people and in different places some distance apart.

On Thursday Karzai called for NATO troops to leave Afghan villages and confine themselves to major bases, underscoring fury over the massacre and clouding U.S. plans to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

An Astute Shopper's Guide To Gathering Data Regarding Car Loans

Some simple research can put you in a better position when you?re looking for a new car loan, or refinancing an existing one. You want to save as much time and money as possible, and it certainly helps to have a full round of informational ammunition with you.

Know your FICO score and other items on your credit report. The FICO score is calculated using various ratings, such as how much debt you currently hold, whether you pay your bills on time, etc. All lenders, may it be mortgages, auto loans or general loans, look at this particular score in the screening process, and would greatly influence you chances of qualifying for a loan?or your chances of being politely rejected for one.

There are three major reporting services where you can get your latest credit report for free, and they are:

Equifax

Experian

Transunion

A common mistake many would make is to automatically assume low interest means good deal. Zero interest offers are made by dealers, especially if a new model is about to be released in due time. A zero percent loan may sound attractive, but perhaps a cash rebate may be better for you.

Simple example ? a 4% loan with a three-year LOL (life of loan) with $2,000 cash rebate may give you a lower monthly payment than some loans with zero interest but no rebate.

Before you start shopping for a new car, pre-qualifying for financing is definitely something to consider. You?ll know ahead of time how much you can afford and you?ll have a better idea of a budget for your new vehicle.

This would also give you some much-needed leverage when negotiating with the dealer. The question of whether you chose their financing options or not can help determine the deals they offer. You could move closer to the deal you are looking for if you have an alternate form of financing on top of their financing package.

Before you agree to the dealer?s financing option, you should make it a point to double, triple, multiple-check the numbers. There may be some instances where you might want to try financing first through your dealer, and once you have commenced the purchase, go for the jugular ? the refinance, that is. There are normally feeds involved for doing this, and some agreements may not allow refinancing so be sure to read the offer thoroughly if you are considering this.

Last, but not least, it would be a good idea if you are aware of the ramifications of leasing and purchasing. There are some cases where the tax advantages of leasing can wind up being a better deal than purchasing.

Don?t make the mad rush to the dealer and make a purchase without thinking ? do your homework first and you will not regret that you took the extra time to research and ensure yourself of the best deal available.

Syracuse avoids being first No. 1 to lose to 16

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Syracuse was missing its starting center. North Carolina-Asheville thought the Orange got help from three men in striped shirts.

With Syracuse facing the kind of NCAA tournament history no team wants to make, the top-seeded Orange rallied for a 72-65 victory Thursday in the second round of the East Regional.

Two calls by the officials had the sellout crowd of 18,927 at Consol Energy Center ? except for those wearing orange ? booing throughout the final minute but it didn't matter.

Syracuse made it 109-0 for No. 1 seeds against No. 16s since the NCAA went to a field of 64 in 1985.

"I don't think luck had anything to do with this game today," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said, "and I think the better team won."

The Orange were staring at NCAA tournament history. A No. 1 seed has never lost to a No. 16 seed, and they were trailing North Carolina-Asheville with just over 6 minutes to play.

"We gave it everything we had. We battled the best that we could," Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach said. "These guys are great. They deserved a better fate than they had today."

Syracuse, which won the national championship in 2003, had already made negative history in the tournament, becoming the first No. 2 seed to lose to a 15 when it fell 73-69 to Richmond in 1991.

The Orange managed to avoid adding another black mark by holding Asheville to one field goal over the final minute while they went 6 of 7 from the free throw line.

Syracuse was playing without 7-foot center Fab Melo, who was declared ineligible for academic reasons by the school and will miss the tournament.

"The fact that this game was close had nothing ? nothing ? to do with the center position," Boeheim said.

Syracuse (32-2) will play eighth-seeded Kansas State in the third round on Saturday. The Wildcats beat Southern Mississippi 70-64.

The Bulldogs (24-10), who talked Wednesday about pulling off the upset, were led by J.P. Primm's 18 points.

They led 34-30 at halftime ? the third 16 to do that ? but the Orange took the lead for good with 6:17 left on a turnaround jumper by reserve James Southerland, who had 15 points and a season-high eight rebounds.

"James has to continue to make the shots and I think he will," Syracuse guard Scoop Jardine said. "I'm happy for him because he's a big part of our offense and today he showed it."

Southerland, who scored 13 points in the second half, had three of the Orange's five 3-pointers.

"James came in, gave us a huge lift off the bench," Boeheim said of the 6-foot-8 junior.

The Bulldogs got within three points three times in the final 1:04 but could get no closer as Syracuse made its free throws and the officials made a couple of controversial calls.

The first call that caused the crowd to react was a lane violation with 1:20 left. Jardine missed the front end of a 1-and-1 but Primm was called for passing the head of the key before Jardine let the shot go. Jardine got to shoot the front end again, made it, and made the second for a 64-58 lead.

"They gave me a second chance to make the shot and I made it," Jardine said. "I got myself into a rhythm. I made every free throw from there on out because I do what I practice and believed in myself at that time and made the shots for us."

Primm said: "They showed it on the replay, I think the crowd let him know that it wasn't the right call. ... Like I said, when it gets crunch time like that, like I say, everyone is human."

With 35 seconds left and the Orange leading 66-63, the ball appeared to go out of bounds off Syracuse's Brandon Triche but the officials pointed the other way and gave it to the Orange. Jardine made two free throws a second later.

Coordinator of Officiating John Adams said he would have given the ball to UNC Asheville on the inbounds play.

"The out of bounds is not reviewable and it is not a play we would discuss," official Ed Corbett told a pool reporter. "I'm not going to comment further because it is a judgment call. It was a clear (lane) violation. The player released early, before the ball hit the rim. We've since watched the replay 20 times and it was the right call."

Boeheim had his own take on the play with Triche.

"First of all, all the noise about the ball going out of bounds, I mean, Triche got pushed. That's why it went out of bounds," he said. "Maybe they missed the out of bounds, they missed the foul call. Those things equal out."

Inexplicably the Orange kept shooting 3-pointers and missing. Despite having a huge height advantage ? Asheville's talllest starter was 6-foot-5, bigger only than the Syracuse guards ? the Orange kept taking 3s against the Bulldogs' 2-3 zone, which isn't as well known as the one Syracuse has played for decades but was just as effective Thursday.

The height advantage didn't do much for the Orange as far as rebounding went either as they had 33, one more than the Bulldogs. Then again, Syracuse was outrebounded by its opponents for the season.

"We just played a good 2-3 zone and mixed it up a little bit, playing man-to-man on one possession, zone on the other, just enough to try to keep 'em off balance," Biedenbach said

Kris Joseph and Dion Waiters both had 12 points for Syracuse, which played its fourth game this season without Melo, the Big East defensive player of the year who missed three games in January over academic issues. The Orange are 3-1 without him.

"We (would) love to have him, but it's about us playing the game," Jardine said. "We got a lot of guys that stepped up today."

Jaron Lane added 16 points and Jeremy Atkinson had 12 for the Bulldogs, whose leading scorer, Matt Dickey, went 1 for 13 from the field, 1 of 9 from 3. Asheville went 9 of 23 from beyond the arc.

"The excitement of the game was crazy. It was March Madness at its finest," Dickey said. "It was awesome and we'll cherish this moment and the opportunity that we had but we'll always look back at this moment and say we should have won or could have won, but that's not enough."

Other No. 1s have trailed a 16 at halftime, the last Kansas, which was behind by two points before going on to beat Holy Cross 70-59 in 2002.

There have been two one-point wins by No. 1s over 16s ? Georgetown over Princeton and Oklahoma over East Tennessee State, both in 1989. And there was one two-point game ? Purdue over Western Carolina in 1996 ? and one that went overtime ? Michigan State 75-71 over Murray State in 1990.

Boeheim earned his 46th win in the NCAA tournament, breaking a tie with Bob Knight for seventh on the career list.

Megatron collects, Hillis heads to Chiefs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Calvin Johnson got the biggest contract in NFL history Wednesday, and he wasn't even a free agent.

The All-Pro wide receiver's eight-year deal through the 2019 season is worth $132 million, with $60 million guaranteed, surpassing the $120 million with $50 million guaranteed being paid to Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald.

"They were happy to get this thing done with, and I was happy as well," Johnson said. "It wasn't a lot of confrontation. We weren't butting heads or anything. It was just something that we knew needed to get done."

Another All-Pro, guard Carl Nicks, left New Orleans for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a five-year contract. Considered one of the NFL's best pass blockers, Nicks is a two-time Pro Bowl player and was a key on the Saints' record-setting offense.

Former 1,000-yard rusher Peyton Hillis is getting a fresh start in Kansas City after a drama- and injury-filled second season in Cleveland after rushing for 1,177 yards in 2010. Terms of the deal weren't immediately disclosed.

Hillis won a nationwide fan vote to be the cover figure for "Madden NFL 12" last offseason, but then rushed for just 587 yards.

Meanwhile, the wait for prized free agent defensive end Mario Williams to decide whether to sign with the Buffalo Bills will last yet another day.

The Bills announced Wednesday night that Williams had left their facility and would return Thursday morning. That means the former Houston Texans star pass-rusher will sleep on making up his mind by spending a second night in Buffalo.

In Detroit, Johnson lived up to his "Megatron" nickname with his spectacular receptions in 2011, catching 96 passes for 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns in leading the Lions back to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Jerry Rice, Randy Moss and Johnson are the only players in NFL history with at least 95 receptions, 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns in a season.

"Calvin's one of those guys ? we've said this about a few guys that we have in our building ? whatever they pay him is not enough," coach Jim Schwartz said. "He's truly a special player."

Tampa has been among the busiest teams in free agency, hardly surprising after the Bucs slumped from 10-6 to 4-12 last year. Nicks joined cornerback Eric Wright, who also signed Wednesday. Wright got a five-year deal, too.

On Tuesday, the Buccaneers added star receiver Vincent Jackson for five years and $55.55 million.

"We've made our mark for what we wanted to accomplish," Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said.

Jacksonville finally got going in free agency, agreeing to terms with receiver Laurent Robinson, defensive tackle C.J. Mosley and backup quarterback Chad Henne. The Jaguars also re-signed defensive end Jeremy Mincey, filling the team's most pressing needs on the second day of free agency.

Robinson agreed to a five-year, $32.5 million contract that gives the team a No. 1 receiver. The deal includes $14 million guaranteed. Mincey signed a four-year contract worth $20 million. It includes $9 million guaranteed ? an $8 million signing bonus and a guaranteed salary of $1 million in 2012.

Indianapolis made receiver Reggie Wayne's return official, and also signed defense end Cory Redding to a contract.

Wayne will get three years and $17.5 million in what likely is the last deal of his career. He's likely to be the No. 1 target for Andrew Luck, who the Colts are expected to take with the top pick in the draft.

Redding enters his 10th NFL season with a fourth team. He also has played for Detroit, Seattle and Baltimore.

"Cory is a big and aggressive interior ... player who is an ideal fit in this defense," coach Chuck Pagano said.

Philadelphia agreed on a five-year contract with wideout and kick returner DeSean Jackson, who was given a franchise tag and would have cost any team signing him two first-round draft picks. Jackson held out last training camp because he wanted an extension and then had a mediocre season. He even was inactive for a game for being late for a team meeting.

But he's a game-breaker that coach Andy Reid wanted back.

"He has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense," Reid said.

Eagles defensive end Trent Cole, who had 11 sacks last season, agreed to a four-year extension with Philadelphia.

Chicago agreed to a three-year deal with wide receiver Eric Weems, also a standout on special teams who could ease the kick returns burden on Devin Hester. The previous day, the Bears traded with Miami for wideout Brandon Marshall and signed quarterback Jason Campbell.

Yet the Bears also brought back Josh McCown on a one-year deal. McCown joined Chicago late last season and appeared in three games, making two starts after Caleb Hanie struggled filling in for Jay Cutler.

New St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher brought in one of his regulars when he was with the Titans, agreeing with cornerback Cortland Finnegan on a five-year contract. Finnegan was an All-Pro in 2008 and is known for his physical style. He got into a punching match with Texans star receiver Andre Johnson during a game in 2010 and both were fined $25,000.

"Obviously, I've had a relationship with him, know him very well and I know he's going to fit in and be a very fine player for us. We're very, very excited about that," Fisher said. "He's a complete corner in that he's got great cover skills, he's a run support corner. He's got flexibility to move inside. There's always potential to match him up with a top receiver on a game-to-game basis."

Finnegan will get $50 million, $27 million guaranteed and $33 million in the first three years. He also can earn and additional $1 million with incentives.

Another Tennessee player, defensive end Jason Jones, was visiting Rams Park on Wednesday.

Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers will get $31.3 million over four years to remain with the 49ers, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. Rogers had six interceptions last season and his return would mean all 11 starters from San Francisco's strong defense will be back for the upcoming season.

The Peyton Manning courtship continued, with the Titans taking their turn at wooing the four-time MVP quarterback who was released earlier this month by Indianapolis. Coach Mike Munchak, general manager Ruston Webster and owner Bud Adams' top executive in Tennessee took off in the team's private plane to Raleigh-Durham, N.C., picked up Manning and returned to meet in Nashville.

The quarterback's suitors already include Denver, Arizona and Miami.

Dallas landed its backup to Tony Romo when it agreed on a three-year deal with Kyle Orton, who has been a starter in Chicago, Denver and Kansas City. Jon Kitna, Romo's backup the last two years, retired after last season.

Derek Anderson said he has agreed to remain in Carolina as Cam Newton's backup. He did not throw a pass last season.

Green Bay's Matt Flynn ? considered the top available QB behind Manning ? had a scheduled visit to Seattle.

The Cowboys bolstered their secondary with Brandon Carr, who was a starting cornerback for Kansas City and will replace Terence Newman, released this week by Dallas. Carr got a five-year deal.

The Chargers re-signed left tackle Jared Gaither to a four-year contract and signed former Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson to a four-year deal. Gaither helped solidify the Chargers' line during the last five games after he was waived by Kansas City. He replaces Marcus McNeill, who was released Tuesday.

San Diego also agreed to a one-year deal with tight end Kory Sperry, whose contract had expired.

The Super Bowl champion Giants signed tight end Martellus Bennett to a deal. They lost starter Jake Ballard and backup Travis Beckum to major knee injuries in the Super Bowl win over the Patriots. Bennett has played behind Jason Witten in Dallas.

The Jets re-signed kicker Nick Folk, who spent the last two years with the team, and cut safety Gerald Alexander.

Oakland cut two more players as part of an offseason overhaul: right guard Cooper Carlisle and defensive tackle John Henderson. The Raiders are now about $10 million under the salary cap.

Cleveland released veteran offensive guard Eric Steinbach, once a major acquisition who missed last season following back surgery and was due to make $6 million this season.

Tight end John Carlson signed a five-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, bringing him to the team he grew up cheering for as a kid in Litchfield, which is about 90 minutes west of the Twin Cities.

A person familiar with the negotiations told the AP that nose tackle Paul Soliai signed a $12 million, two-year contract to remain with the Miami Dolphins. The deal includes $6 million guaranteed.

Red meat consumption linked to increased risk of total, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality

ScienceDaily (Mar. 12, 2012) ? A new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers has found that red meat consumption is associated with an increased risk of total, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. The results also showed that substituting other healthy protein sources, such as fish, poultry, nuts, and legumes, was associated with a lower risk of mortality.

The study will be published online in Archives of Internal Medicine on March 12, 2012.

"Our study adds more evidence to the health risks of eating high amounts of red meat, which has been associated with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers in other studies," said lead author An Pan, research fellow in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH.

The researchers, including senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at HSPH, and colleagues, prospectively observed 37,698 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study for up to 22 years and 83,644 women in the Nurses' Health Study for up to 28 years who were free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer at baseline. Diets were assessed through questionnaires every four years.

A combined 23,926 deaths were documented in the two studies, of which 5,910 were from CVD and 9,464 from cancer. Regular consumption of red meat, particularly processed red meat, was associated with increased mortality risk. One daily serving of unprocessed red meat (about the size of a deck of cards) was associated with a 13% increased risk of mortality, and one daily serving of processed red meat (one hot dog or two slices of bacon) was associated with a 20% increased risk.

Among specific causes, the corresponding increases in risk were 18% and 21% for cardiovascular mortality, and 10% and 16% for cancer mortality. These analyses took into account chronic disease risk factors such as age, body mass index, physical activity, family history of heart disease, or major cancers.

Red meat, especially processed meat, contains ingredients that have been linked to increased risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. These include heme iron, saturated fat, sodium, nitrites, and certain carcinogens that are formed during cooking.

Replacing one serving of total red meat with one serving of a healthy protein source was associated with a lower mortality risk: 7% for fish, 14% for poultry, 19% for nuts, 10% for legumes, 10% for low-fat dairy products, and 14% for whole grains. The researchers estimated that 9.3% of deaths in men and 7.6% in women could have been prevented at the end of the follow-up if all the participants had consumed less than 0.5 servings per day of red meat.

"This study provides clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death," said Hu.
