London prostitutes 'cleaned from the streets'

The London Olympics are not big business for everyone -- sex workers say they are being cleared from the streets around the stadium to make the area more presentable for the Games.

While Britain's limp economy hopes for an Olympic boost, police in Newham, the deprived east London borough that is home to the stadium, have closed some 80 brothels in the 18 months to March, according to a study by a local councillor.

"For the last two years we've seen a real increase in police activity in relation to sex work in the Olympic host boroughs," said Georgina Perry, who runs Open Doors, a government project supporting east London prostitutes.

"Some of the women who sell sex have experienced so many brothel closures that they are now working on the street, and that is a much less safe place," she told AFP.

"Street women are experiencing a lot of police requests for them to move on from the area. They're not wanted there during the Olympic Games."

The expected influx of two million visitors for the Olympics has led Prime Minister David Cameron to predict predicted a ?13 billion ($20.2 billion, 16.3 billion euro) boost for the economy over the next four years.

But the sex trade looks likely to miss out on any benefits, campaigners say.

Prostitution is legal in Britain, but keeping a brothel is outlawed, as are other related activities such as curb-crawling.

London's Metropolitan Police have denied that the brothel raids were connected to the Olympics, saying they were "in response to community concerns".

"Any police activity regarding prostitution has been undertaken as part of normal policing responsibilities," a police spokeswoman told AFP.

But London's mayor Boris Johnson openly supports a crackdown on the sex trade ahead of the Olympics.

"We are determined to crack down on prostitution and human trafficking in the run up to the London 2012 Games," a statement on his website reads.

Scotland Yard said it was unable to specify the number of east London brothels that have been raided and sex workers arrested in the run-up to the Olympics.

But charities working with local prostitutes, many of whom are migrants from Brazil and eastern Europe, have reported a spike in the number arrested, on charges ranging from soliciting to drug possession.

Critics say the crackdown does little to stamp out the sex trade -- it simply shifts it around the city, endangering sex workers in the process.

Perry said brothel raids have forced more prostitutes to confront the dangers of approaching strangers in cars, while clearing them from familiar areas leaves them disconnected from services like Open Doors.

"They are already stigmatised, they are already vulnerable," said Perry.

"All that's happening to them is that they're moving further away from services that can support them."

But not everyone is so unhappy about the crackdown.

Brick Lane, the vibrant stretch of curry restaurants that is home to London's Bangladeshi community, lies just four miles (seven kilometres) from the Olympic Park.

"This area is a haven for drugs, prostitution, and all the other crimes you can think of," said mother-of-three Lily Islam, standing in the middle of her housing estate just off the famous street.

In the last few months, Islam has led a successful campaign to force police to keep prostitutes away from the estate, which its overwhelmingly Muslim residents say has been blighted by the sex trade for decades.

Like Perry, she is concerned about the safety of female sex workers -- but she said she and her friends were sick of walking their children to school through an estate littered with used condoms.

She suspects that the coming Games are part of the reason her local police have been so keen to help.

"I think with the Olympics coming, it's highlighted the problem a bit more," she said.

Scotland Yard has said there is no evidence that prostitution has risen in east London ahead of the Games.

In fact, one sex worker told AFP that her colleagues are bracing for a sharp fall in business.

"It's a family event -- it's not like all the visitors are going to be single men," said Catherine Stephens, sheltering from the drizzle in London's Soho red light district.

"It's going to be a complete nightmare, and I think we're all going to lose masses of money," added Stephens, who has worked in brothels for more than a decade.

"I don't think we're going to see the clientele we normally see, because it's going to be so difficult to get around. Most of the people I know are planning to take a couple of weeks off."

Campaign lull as Obama to visit Colo. victims

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will fly to Colorado on Sunday to visit with the families of victims from the Aurora movie theater shooting, the White House announced, as he and Mitt Romney dialed back their campaigning in the shocked aftermath of the massacre.

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer disclosed plans for the visit Saturday night. Aides said Obama's stop would also include meetings with state and local officials.

Friday's deadly rampage briefly silenced the acrimonious presidential contest, with both campaigns cutting short schedules and pulling advertising in Colorado out of respect for the dead and injured.

But for Obama, the pause was to be short-lived. After his Colorado visit, he was to fly Reno, Nev., for a Monday speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, followed by a series of campaign fundraisers in California, Oregon and Washington state. Romney is also expected to speak to the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."

The White House said Obama received updates Saturday from John Brennan, his homeland security adviser, on the investigation into the shooting and the attempts by authorities to gain access to the suspect's apparently booby-trapped apartment.

Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.

The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.

Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shooting occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shooting served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."

"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."

"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.

Other prominent lawmakers called the shooting a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.

"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.

Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shooting could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.

As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."

Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.

But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.

"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.

"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

SK: Tell me a little about yourself?? where you grew up, where you live now?

Amy: I grew up in the small town of Harvard, Nebraska. I lived there my whole growing-up years and graduated high school there. Went to college in Norfolk, Nebraska at Nebraska Christian College for a semester and then got married and we have kind of moved all over Nebraska and for a brief stint in Kansas where my husband is from. Currently we live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

SK: Did you have any attachment parenting role models in your life as you were growing up?

Amy: Funny you ask. I have been trying to figure this one out a lot lately. I wouldn?t say yes per se?? although my parents were pretty hands-on, they definitely weren?t AP. I think I had an older cousin who was probably my biggest role model in that department (although I?m sure she had no idea). I know that is where I saw breastfeeding from the light of ?no big deal, when Baby is hungry it?s just something you do wherever you are.? I?m very thankful for that.

"I knew very specifically what kind of mom I wanted to be"

Despite not having a huge AP role model from an early age, I always wanted to be a mom, and for me I knew very specifically what kind of mom I wanted to be?? how I wanted to care for my children; I guess it was just instinctual more than anything. No one had shown me but also no one had taken that away, if that makes sense.

SK: When did you meet your husband? How did you know he was ?the one??

Amy: Austin was from Kansas but was going to school at Nebraska Christian College and needed a summer job. One of his good friends was going to work at a log home building business in my small town. We ate supper together a lot at their house as well as I worked at the grocery store and he often came in there.

He came back to work the following summer also and that is when he offered to fix the stereo in my car. I brought my car over for him to tinker with that night and after that we were pretty much inseparable. When I went off to college he quit his job, followed me?? and the rest is history. We were engaged a month and three weeks later to the shock of our friends and family. And as far as how did I know, well, it?s cheesy but I just knew. I think when you know, you know.

SK: Did you both have similar philosophies when you began discussing having children, or did you both inspire one another as your children came along?

Amy: We discussed things a little but I don?t think you really know until you start having them. I think we just both feed off of each other. The one thing I did know was that I wanted to be there, to be physically present. I wanted parenting to be my main focus rather than a nine to five job. I didn?t want to miss one second of their little lives. And I didn?t want them to grow up with a babysitter who was closer to them than I was or feeling like they were constantly being shoved off with someone else.

SK: What was your first birth like?

Amy: When it was time to choose a provider, the receptionist said, ?Would you like to go with the midwife we have?? and I said, ?Sure!? and that?s how it all began. I?m not sure I put much thought into that part but I remember being excited when I heard the term midwife and I vaguely knew what that was.

I ended up being induced on my son?s due date. It was of my own hounding that this came about not because of any medical necessity. I wasn?t where I am now and just didn?t think anything of it. Like many first-time moms, I was a frequent flyer saying, ?Is this it? Is this labor?? I didn?t know it was OK and dandy to go after your due date.

"My plan was to birth in water. Oh that tub was heavenly"

I was very excited about the birth pool. My plan was to birth in water. Oh that tub was heavenly. It was a hard-sided Aqua Doula and the depth was amazing! I could go on and on about how it felt to be in there. Contractions slowed down so I ended up getting out so I could be hooked back up [to] the pit and that was kind of a trend? get hooked up, get them going and monitor, get unhooked, get back in the pool and relax. After some pushing in the water I ended up getting out and delivering him on land.

After two and a half hours of pushing, at just after midnight, (12:06 to be exact), I met my little boy Kalel. He was 8 pounds, 2-1/2 ounces. Everyone seemed suprised at his size. I was so so happy! We have it on video and the first words out of my mouth are, ?Oh yay! Now we can have another!? Of course everyone laughed but I was serious. I was a mom and I was hooked! Recovery was wonderful!
