In preparation for an upcoming Afghanistan deployment this summer as security force assistance teams, nearly 100 Soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, attended a communications training class March 5 through 9 at East Fort Bliss.

Throughout the week, ?Highlander? officers and noncommissioned officers received instruction on the basic theory and principles of radio signals and antennas to provide them with needed communications knowledge before deploying.

The training, which was conducted by the Communications-Electronics Command, included a practical lab that allowed Soldiers to familiarize themselves with frequency ranges, modes of operation, system installation and programming of both wideband and high capacity line-of-sight radios.

The information learned in this course will be particularly useful for SFAT members, who will use the radio systems to establish voice and data capabilities at their locations in Afghanistan, said Shane Crissman, a CECOM instructor based out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

?We?re getting trained on equipment to send data from Point A to Point B,? said Sgt. 1st Class James Stewart, communications noncommissioned officer-in-charge assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment.

The radio technology will also alleviate the use of traditional hardwire cables, which often need to be dug up and repaired, especially in high-traffic areas at forward operating bases, said Stewart.

SFAT members will continue to receive training in a variety of disciplines before their departure for Afghanistan to ensure they are all fully capable of maximizing mission success and safety.
