No. 3 LSU overcomes sloppiness, beats Towson 38-22

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Zach Mettenberger's perfectly placed 53-yard scoring strike to Odell Beckham Jr. exemplified the type of play Les Miles wanted to see from LSU's offense before the Tigers hit one of the toughest stretches on their schedule.

If only that play had been the norm instead of the exception in a mistake-filled outing, Miles might not have been describing a "somber locker room" following No. 3 LSU's 38-22 victory over Towson on Saturday night.

"It was just sloppy play," Mettenberger said. "We have been sloppy week in and week out. We have to clean it up. Right now we are not playing LSU football. I'm very disappointed in myself and the team right now."

Mettenberger hit Beckham five times for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and the quarterback finished 15 of 26 for 238 yards passing and no interceptions. Still, Mettenberger was sacked four times, missed some open receivers and a fumble he gave up ? one of three LSU turnovers ? led to the first of two touchdown runs by Towson's Terrance West.

West's first TD run gave Towson (2-2), an FCS team, a stunning 9-7 lead in the second quarter before LSU (5-0) responded with 24 straight points.

J.C. Copeland, LSU's powerful 272-pound fullback, scored his third touchdown of the season on a 1-yard plunge after LSU's Jarvis Landry recovered Jordan Love's muffed punt on the Towson 8 in the third quarter.

However, Copeland was hurt in the fourth quarter and did not put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field. Miles did not have an update on Copeland's condition after the game, but insinuated he could be sidelined a while when he added, "We still have a couple of fullbacks that we can line up and play with."

In all, LSU fell short of the confidence-building performance it wanted before a trip to No. 11 Florida next weekend, followed by a visit from No. 6 South Carolina.

"If we don't turn the ball over or throw the ball on the ground and we protect our quarterback ... this thing looks like it's supposed to," Miles said. "I must not well have prepared them."

LSU had portrayed its 12-10 victory at Auburn a week earlier as a wakeup call, but it continued to stumble intermittently against its first FCS opponent of the season ? enough so that frustrated fans routinely groaned and even booed.

"To say that we made improvement, I can't say that," Miles said. "I'd have to say it was the same style of football that we played last week."

LSU fumbled five times in all but recovered the ball twice. Mettenberger's fumble was his third in two games. Michael Ford's fumble in the third quarter stalled a likely scoring drive on the Towson 13. Kenny Hilliard's fumble set up Towson's opening points on a field goal.

Ford still had a solid game overall, rushing 11 times for 76 yards, including a 4-yard TD. Receiver Russell Shepard had his best play on a designed run in the first quarter, when he burst through the line and sped down the sideline for a career-long 78-yard scoring run that he finished by diving to the pylon.

Towson's Grant Enders was 13 of 33 for 103 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Gerrard Shepard. He also rushed for 86 yards. West finished with 79 yards on 22 carries.

"I'm extremely conflicted," said Towson coach Rob Ambrose, whose program earned more than $500,000 and invaluable exposure for its nationally televised visit to Death Valley. "You don't line up to lose. With that being said, as a head coach, as an alum, as a father, I don't think it's humanly possible for me to be more proud of these players."

Towson did not drive past its own 30 on its first three possessions, but Hilliard's fumble on the LSU 38 late in the first quarter gave Towson its first break, and it capitalized with D.J. Soven's field goal.

Five of LSU's first six drives ended with three punts, a fumble and a missed 51-yard field goal attempt, keeping Towson in the game. Beckham later said he sensed a lack of intensity among his teammates.

"You could just see it on the sidelines," he said. "Everybody was really just not into the game. As soon as everybody started to get into the game things started to pick up. We just have to continue to do that."

The animated Ambrose appeared to be thoroughly enjoying his Death Valley experience on the visitor's sideline, and it only got better for him when Mettenberger fumbled on a sack while scrambling left and Towson recovered on LSU's 45. Soon after, Enders scrambled 43 yards to the LSU 1, and West dove over the pile to give Towson the lead. The point-after kick missed, however, leaving it 9-7.

"It boosted our confidence," Enders said. "With the opportunity to be on this stage and scoring the first touchdown, we realized we could play with them."

Mettenberger responded as LSU hoped on his next drive, hitting tight end Chase Clement over the middle for 27 yards, then finding Beckham for a 27-yard score to make it 14-9.

LSU had another scoring chance before halftime after Towson's R.J. Peppers shanked a punt only 6 yards to his own 22, but the drive stalled at the 5, setting up Drew Alleman's field goal to make it 17-9.

Occupy protester can't keep tweets from DA

    13 hrs.

NEW YORK???An Occupy Wall Street protester has lost his latest bid to prevent the Manhattan district attorney's office from using his tweets against him, clearing the way for the judge overseeing the case to unseal the tweets and give them to prosecutors.

In a case that has drawn the attention of electronic privacy advocates, a New York judge denied a request from the protester, Malcolm Harris, to put the tweets on ice while his appeal is pending.

Harris, 23, was arrested along with hundreds of others during a mass march across the Brooklyn Bridge in October 2011 for obstructing vehicular traffic.

Prosecutors subpoenaed Twitter for several months of his tweets, which are no longer available online, to combat his argument that police appeared to lead the protest onto the bridge before turning around and arresting them for walking on the roadway.

Electronic privacy advocates worry a precedent could be set that would make it more difficult for social media users to challenge law enforcement's use of their online words against them.

Twitter and Harris have unsuccessfully fought the subpoena, which has been repeatedly upheld as lawful by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino. The San Francisco-based company finally surrendered the tweets earlier this month after Sciarrino threatened it with contempt and a hefty fine.

Sciarrino had agreed to seal the tweets until a state Supreme Court judge ruled on Harris' latest request for a stay of Sciarrino's order upholding the subpoena. The judge, Carol Huff, denied the request this week.

Martin Stolar, Harris' attorney, said he was "disappointed" but would continue to pursue other legal challenges.

Sciarrino is reviewing the tweets and will provide to prosecutors those that appear relevant to the criminal case.

Twitter still has an appeal of Sciarrino's order pending in an intermediate appellate court, scheduled to be heard in November.

Harris also has a separate civil action pending, claiming Sciarrino overstepped his authority; prosecutors have asked a court to dismiss that lawsuit as an improper attempt to circumvent the normal appellate procedure.

Harris' criminal trial is scheduled for December.

The case is People v. Harris, Criminal Court of the City of New York, No. 2011NY080152.

UN rights body extends Syria war crimes mission

GENEVA (AP) ? The U.N.'s top human rights body on Friday extended by six months the mission of its independent expert panel probing alleged war crimes in Syria's 18-month conflict.

The body also named renowned former U.N. war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte to the panel, in a sign of stepped-up efforts to gather evidence against members of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

The panel has blamed Syria's government forces for the majority of serious abuses since the uprising began in March 2011. The collected evidence could one day be used in a war crimes tribunal hearing ? although none is so far planned at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.

Along with Del Ponte, the U.N. Human Rights Council also named Vitit Muntarbhorn, a Thai professor who has investigated human rights in North Korea.

Last week, the panel submitted a confidential second list of suspected war crimes perpetrators to the U.N. human rights office. The mandate of the panel, led by Brazilian professor Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, was due to expire at the end of the month.

Members of the 47-nation Human Rights Council voted 41 to three in favor of a resolution put forward by Arab states. Three countries abstained. Russia, China and Cuba opposed the resolution.

The resolution, which extends the mission until the council's next session in March, was drawn up by a number of Arab, Western and developing countries.

Syria's ambassador, Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui, denounced the resolution and lashed out at those who backed it ? in particular Arab states who are funding Syrian opposition fighters.

"They have decided to draft a resolution that is very tolerant to al-Qaida," he said, insisting that Syria will "never become an extremist Islamic emirate."

The U.S. ambassador, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, said that the investigative panel "has been doing its job" ? notably to turn up information that could one day be used to prosecute those behind Syria's bloodshed.

The panel's members "will help ensure that this will not be a case where impunity prevails, but rather that those responsible for these crimes against the Syrian people will face justice and accountability," she said.

U.S. students grill Argentina President Fernandez in Washington

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Georgetown University students in Washington D.C. got to do something on Wednesday that Argentine journalists rarely get to do: grill visiting President Cristina Fernandez on issues like her country's discredited inflation statistics.

Fernandez is a gifted public speaker but she seldom holds news conferences or gives interviews at home. Her drive to crack down on media monopolies has aggravated a long-running feud with top Argentine conglomerate Grupo Clarin.

One student asked Fernandez why he and fellow Latin American studies classmates were allowed to ask her questions when Argentine journalists rarely get the chance.

"In Argentina, when a reporter doesn't like the answer, he starts to yell and make a fuss," Fernandez said, appearing surprised by the question. "They scream, get angry, they throw things, one broke a door in the press room once."

"In the United states, the journalist asks a question and the president responds and that's it," Fernandez said in the meeting, which was carried on Argentine television. The last time she gave a press conference was just after her landslide re-election in October 2011.

The next student to quiz the 59-year-old Peronist leader raised an even more controversial subject; the country's discredited inflation data.

The student from Texas asked, in beginner's Spanish, for her reaction to the International Monetary Fund's decision to warn the government to clean up its statistics.

Fernandez has long been criticized for saying inflation is about half of that estimated by private economists, who clock annual consumer price rises at more than 20 percent.

"The IMF is absolutely against Argentina," said Fernandez, who then asked the students if they know what U.S. inflation is.

Told that it was somewhere around 2 percent (the official annual rate was 1.7 percent in August), she scoffed: "Do you really think inflation is 2 percent per year in your country? Really, guys?"

Wall Street says Argentina massages its data in part to save money on its inflation-indexed debt by underreporting price increases. The government has denied any data manipulation.

Iran ready to defend against Israeli attack: Ahmadinejad

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Iran does not take seriously Israeli threats of attack, but is prepared to defend itself, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted that Israel could strike Iran's nuclear sites and has criticized U.S. President Barack Obama's position that sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

Iran denies that it is seeking nuclear arms and says its atomic work is peaceful, aimed at generating electricity.

"Fundamentally we do not take seriously the threats of the Zionists. ... We have all the defensive means at our disposal and we are ready to defend ourselves," Ahmadinejad told reporters in New York, where he is due to attend the U.N. General Assembly.

"While we are fully ready to defend ourselves, we do not take such threats seriously," he said, speaking through an interpreter.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was quoted as saying on Sunday that Iran could launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel if it was sure the Jewish state was preparing to attack it.

"The nuclear issue is not a problem. But the approach of the United States on Iran is important," Ahmadinejad told reporters. "We are ready for dialogue, for a fundamental resolution of the problems" but under conditions that are based on "fairness and mutual respect," he added.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned Ahmadinejad of the dangers of incendiary rhetoric when two men met in New York on Sunday before this week's annual gathering of world leaders at the General Assembly.

In previous years, Ahmadinejad has used his U.N. speeches to defend Iran's nuclear program and to attack Israel, the United States and Europe. He has questioned the Holocaust and cast doubt on whether 19 hijackers were really responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.

Western envoys predictably walk out of Ahmadinejad's speeches in protest.

There will be high-level side meetings on Iran's nuclear program and Syria during the General Assembly, but U.N. diplomats do not expect either issue to be resolved soon.

Manchester Food & Drink Festival 5?.

It was good to see all the little producers of food and drink who had come to show off their produce in the city and, of course, for us to buy it.

There was some delicious black?pudding. It?s a locally made kind of sausage and is delicious. It was originally a cheap food for poor people but has gone upmarket with top chefs using it in their dishes in the city?s exclusive restaurants. I can?t eat it because I know what goes in it?..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding

I do eat garlic though. I love it. I?m am rarely attacked by vampires and Hallow?een holds no terrors for me. I have never seen elephant garlic though?..

It wouldn?t be an British food festival without some tea. This guy was selling delcious teas and coffees and the tea and coffee pots to make them?..

My favourite Manchester cupcake store, Hey Little Cupcake, had come across from Spinningfields to show off their cupcakes. By the time I?d going there they only had one Manchester Mint Whoopie Pie left?.

Over 500 Boots pharmacists trained to give wider cancer support

Macmillan Cancer Support and Boots UK have used their partnership to train over 500 Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists, with the aim of increasing cancer patients? access to local support and services.

The two organisations began their three-year partnership in 2010 to try and connect the wider community with Macmillan?s support services.

A recent YouGov survey of 1,001 adults diagnosed with cancer a year ago or more, found that a third of people affected by cancer do not believe they have received enough support and information outside of their healthcare team (which does not include pharmacists). In a bid to address this gap, Boots UK and Macmillan have provided training to participating pharmacists as part of their continuing professional development. These Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists will be based in Boots stores across the country.

This is the first time the role of community pharmacists has been extended to provide this type of cancer assistance, according to Boots UK and Macmillan. They believe it demonstrates the wider role that pharmacy can play in provision of cancer services.

Peter Bainbridge, director of pharmacy services at Boots UK, said the partnership means that in addition to providing medicines advice, the pharmacists can offer guidance and signpost people to Macmillan services related to the wider issues affecting those living with cancer.

Rosie Loftus, lead GP adviser to Macmillan, believes that as the number of people in the UK living with or surviving cancer increases the demand for cancer services means pharmacists are well placed to assist with the provision of information and support alongside existing primary care services. "This is an example of the ways in which the healthcare community can work collaboratively," she said.

The YouGov survey found that 45 per cent of respondents would be comfortable talking to their pharmacist about cancer and 92 per cent believed that information received outside of their healthcare team had a positive impact on their emotional, physical or financial wellbeing.

Texas inmate prepares for 3rd trip death house

LIVINGSTON, Texas ? What Cleve Foster remembers most about his recent brushes with death is the steel door, the last one condemned Texas inmates typically walk through before their execution.

"You can't take your eyes off that door," he says.

But twice over the past year and a half, Foster has come within moments of being escorted through the door, only to be told the U.S. Supreme Court had halted his scheduled punishment.

On Tuesday, Foster, 48, is scheduled for yet another trip to the death house for participating in the abduction and slaying of a 30-year-old Sudanese woman, Nyaneur Pal, a decade ago near Fort Worth.

It takes just under an hour to drive west from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Polunsky Unit, where the state's male death-row inmates are housed, to the Huntsville Unit, where condemned Texas prisoners have been put to death for nearly a century. The last 485 have been by lethal injection; the first 361, from 1924 through 1964, from the electric chair.

On execution day, the condemned inmate waits, usually for about four hours, in a tiny cell a few steps from the steel door to the death chamber.

Foster, a former Army recruiter known to his death row colleagues as "Sarge," denies his role in the murder. Prosecutors say DNA ties him to the killing and that he gave contradictory stories when questioned about Pal's death.

"I did not do it," he insisted recently from a tiny visiting cage outside death row.

Appeals again were pending in the courts, focusing on what his lawyers argued was poor legal help both at his 2004 trial in Fort Worth and by attorneys early in the appeals process. Similar appeals resulted in the three previous reprieves the courts subsequently have lifted, but his lawyers argue his case should get another look because the legal landscape has changed in death penalty cases.

"I don't want to sound vain, but I have confidence in my attorney and confidence in my God," he said. "I can win either way."

Pal's relatives haven't spoken publicly about their experiences of going to the prison to watch Foster die, only to be told the punishment has been delayed. An uncle previously on the witness list didn't return a phone call Friday from The Associated Press.

Foster, however, shared his thoughts of going through the mechanics of facing execution in Texas ? and living to talk about it.

The process shifts into high gear at noon on the scheduled execution day when a four-hour-long visit with friends or relatives ends at the Polunsky Unit outside Livingston.

"That last visit, that's the only thing that bothers me," he said. "The 12 o'clock-hour hits. A dozen or so guards come to escort you."

By Foster's count, it's 111 steps to the prison gate and an area known as the box cage. That's where he's secured to a chair for electronic scrutiny to detect whether he has any metal objects hidden on his body.

It's the legacy of inmate Ponchai Wilkerson. Wilkerson, asked by the warden if he had a final statement after he was strapped to the death chamber gurney for execution in 2000, defiantly spit out a handcuff key he'd concealed in his mouth.

"You're in handcuffs, you're chained at the ankles, they give you cloth shoes and you have to shuffle to keep them on," he said.

As he waddles the 111 steps, he gets acknowledgement from fellow prisoners who tap on the glass of their cells.

At the prison gate, armed officers stand by as he's put in a van and secured to a seat for the roughly 45-mile trip to Huntsville that he says feels like a "90-mph drive." There are no side windows in the back of the van where Foster, accompanied by four officers, rides to the oldest prison in Texas. Only the back doors have windows.

"It's like stepping back in time, dungeons and dragons," he said of entering through two gates at the back of the Huntsville Unit, more commonly known as the Walls Unit because of its 20-foot-high red brick walls.

Prison officials then hustle him into the cell area adjacent to the death chamber.

"Going inside, it's a little spooky. You can tell it's been there a while," he said. "Everything's polished, but still it's real old. You look down the row. History just screams at you.

"It's almost like 'Hotel California,'" he said, referring to the song by The Eagles. "You can check out anytime, but you can't leave."

Both times he's been there, most recently last September, he's been treated "like a human being," Foster said. Officers look at him but don't smile, he said.

At one point, he saw someone walk by with a bulging envelope that he assumed contained the lethal injection drugs.

At 4 p.m., during his first trip to the death house in January 2011, he was served a final meal. He'd asked for several items, including chicken.

"It tasted so good," he said. "It actually had seasoning on it."

Two hours later, at the start of a six-hour window when his execution could be carried out, he received the Supreme Court reprieve.

Since then, inmates no longer get to make a final meal request. Procedures were changed after a state lawmaker complained that condemned inmates were taking advantage of the opportunity and that murder victims never get that chance.

Foster was looking forward to nachos and chicken, the same food served to other inmates the day last year that he made his second trip to the death house, but he never received it. Instead, his attorney tearfully brought him news of another Supreme Court reprieve just before dinner time.

He asked for a doggie bag but was refused. He was put back in the van and returned to death row.

"I've already told the chaplain: Take the phone off the hook before 4 o'clock," he said, anticipating his next trip Tuesday. "I want to get that last meal."

Film festival opens in movie-crazy North Korea

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? An international film festival opens Thursday in what may seem the unlikeliest of places: North Korea.

Held every two years, the Pyongyang International Film Festival offers North Koreans their only chance to see a wide array of foreign films on the big screen ? from Britain, Germany and elsewhere (but not America). And it's the only time foreigners are allowed into North Korean theaters to watch movies alongside locals.

This year, festivalgoers will get the chance to see two feature films shot in North Korea but edited overseas: the romantic comedy "Comrade Kim Goes Flying," a joint North Korean-European production, and "Meet in Pyongyang," made in conjunction with a Chinese studio.

Foreign offerings include a Sherlock Holmes film and the romantic comedy "The Decoy Bride" from Britain, the Jet Li kung fu film "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate," the French hit "Women on the 6th Floor" about a community of Spanish emigres to Paris, and two love stories from Iran.

While it's true that homegrown movies predictably tend toward communist propaganda with a healthy dose of tear-jerker, North Korea is a film-crazy country. Well-to-do residents pay as much as 500 won (about $5 according to official exchange rates) to see new releases from the government-run Korean Film Studio, as well as Russian and Chinese imports.

Those who don't have the means to go to the theater tune into the Mansudae TV channel, which shows mostly Chinese and Eastern European films on weekends. Some recent offerings have included "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the only Western offering shown on state TV in recent memory, the British film "Bend It Like Beckham," which aired in 2010.

This year, a huge screen in front of the Pyongyang train station has become another popular place to watch movies. On Monday, hundreds of locals stood transfixed by a North Korean drama in a plaza in front of the station.

U.S. films are rare, with one exception: Disney films can be found at North Korean DVD shops. A concert for leader Kim Jong Un in July featured performers dressed as Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and other Disney characters.

Kim's father and predecessor, the late Kim Jong Il, was a notorious film buff.

He was 7 when he saw his first film ? "My Hometown" ? the inaugural film made at by the Korean Film Studio. The film, about a young man who returns to his village after Korea is liberated from Japan, made a lifelong impression on the future leader, according to Choe Hung Ryol, director of the studio's external affairs department.

In 1973 Kim published a treatise called "On the Art of the Cinema," in which he extolled filmmaking as a way to aid the people's "development into true communists."

"Creative work is not a mere job, but an honorable revolutionary task," he wrote.

In 1978, Kim "recruited" a South Korean director, Shin Sang-ok, and his actress ex-wife, Choi Eun-hee. According to the late director's memoirs, he was lured to Pyongyang to make propaganda films, but he and his wife slipped away from their bodyguards during a 1986 trip to Vienna.

Kim's father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, also wrote a film called "The Flower Girl," and current leader Kim Jong Un also has a keen interest in film, according to Korean Film Studio spokesman Choe.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Choe acknowledged that the main purpose of North Korean cinema is propaganda.

"Our films carry a different purpose than movies made in other countries," he said. "We make films for the purpose of ideological education."

And to play with the emotions of the audience, evidently.

"If you watch a lot of North Korean films, you'll find yourself crying a lot," he said. "If you don't cry, you're clearly a person without emotion."

A visit to the film studio is a lot like going back in time, from the thatched cottages of a bygone rural Korea, to the ancient royal palaces of the Choson Dynasty, to a louche depiction of 1950s South Korea compete with brothels, pubs and pharmacies.

"American tourists who come here always tap the walls to see if the buildings are real," Choe said. "They say the sets in Hollywood are just facades."

For British filmmaker Nicholas Bonner and his Belgian co-producer Anja Daelemans, the upcoming North Korean premiere of "Comrade Kim Goes Flying" will be a moment nearly seven years in the making.

The film, a romantic comedy about a coal miner who dreams of becoming an acrobat, was shot in North Korea in 2010 with a local cast, directed by veteran North Korean filmmaker Kim Gwang Hun, and edited in Belgium.

"It's not what you expect from North Korea, and it's not something people have seen before," Bonner said.

Writing the script took three years, as the North Korean and European members of the team worked to come up with a story line that was both entertaining and politically safe for showing in North Korea. Bonner credits the Koreans with contributing some of the film's funniest moments.

"In the end, you're dealing with professionals," Bonner said. "They do their job. You're in the film world, and we're all making a film."

But for sheer scale, "Comrade Kim" can't possibly compete with the heavyweight of North Korean cinema, the 63-part epic "Nation and Destiny," which began in the 1990s. Filming is already under way on part 64.

Stephan Bonnar took the Anderson Silva fight because of Silva?s many Twitter followers

Stephan Bonnar stepped up when the UFC needed an opponent. Two UFC 153 fights had fallen apart: Jose Aldo's bout with Frankie Edgar and Glover Teixeria's fight with Quinton Jackson. Bonnar jumped into the main event spot at UFC 153 against Anderson Silva. Though that fight seems a bit crazy for Bonnar, there's a reason why he took Silva instead of Teixeira.

    Twitter followers.

The mostly-retired Bonnar said the UFC originally offered Teixeira, but he reminded them of his rule.

"I said, 'You know my rule. If I'm going to do this again, he's got to have more Twitter followers than me.' I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true. That's how I feel. That's a measure of someone's popularity, and I just want a bigger name. The last three opponents, I've had more Twitter followers than them, and I've beat them, and I feel like I deserve a bigger name now. I really don't have an interest in fighting an up-and-comer type, guys who are climbing their way up and people don't really know how good they are."

But Silva? He and his 2,549,212 followers make the cut. Bonnar didn't think his manager would be able to make that fight. But the fight was made, and the news spread quickly. Bonnar finally confirmed it with UFC president Dana White on Friday.

Not long after, Bonnar started doing his specialized training for Silva.
