NASHVILLE, TN (KFVS)- Music stars reach out to help a Heartland family fight cancer with a once in a lifetime benefit show.
They are legendary songwriters who jumped at a chance to help Joe Hoffman, a Jackson man take on cancer.
Hoffman worked hard all his life until liver cancer hit him hard seven months ago, taking quite a toll physically and financially. The family now faces more than $50,000 in medical bills.
When friend and Nashville recording artist Brooke Burrows found out, she called on the names behind some of country's biggest hits to help.
"I was blown away," said Dollie Hoffman, Joe's wife. "It's just amazing to know someone wants to help."
As Hoffman goes through cancer treatment, his family says they are more than grateful.
"We can't even put into words how much we appreciate this," said daughter Amanda Hoffman Crombie. "He's always taught us to work hard. He's always been my hero so to see him in need is hard."
Burrows says she visited her friends on her last trip to the Heartland and felt she had to do something.
"I know these artists get asked to do a lot of shows, but they've all been personally affected by cancer. They all immediately said they would help," said Burrows.
What they came up with was a unique show for Cape Girardeau. A night of "Storytellers Behind the Songs."
"I don't know that Cape's ever seen anything like this," said Burrows.
Songwriters include Aaron Barker show wrote countless George Strait hits including ?Baby Blue' and ?Easy Come, Easy Go.' Chris Wallin and his wife Camile will also perform. Chris is known for his songs like ?Don't Blink' performed by Kenny Chesney, and ?Love Me If You Can' by Toby Keith.
"I think there's a whole different healing that goes on when you see people come together for a great cause," said Chris Wallin.
Camille has been performing since she was a little girl, and can't wait to bring her country meets rock n' roll style to the event.
"People are really going to see a variety," said Camille Wallin. "I lost my sister and my dad to cancer so this means a lot to me to be a part of this."
"We are the guys that lived the songs," said Barker. "This is just really neat when you hear the songs sung by the guys that lived them and hear where they came up with what they wrote about. It's really unique and special and intimate to see a group of songwriters perform like this."
Ira Dean, formerly of Trick Pony, will also perform. Most recently he's written a string of hits for Montgomery Gentry and Rascal Flatts.
"I love performing with all these guys and Camille," said Dean. "You work hard in this business to be able to make a difference like this."
Burrows also can't wait to perform her upcoming songs for the hometown crowd.
"People are really in for a treat that will help my great friends, a great family," said Burrows.
For the Hoffman family it's an overwhelming gesture for a man that's always been their hero.
"He's really looking forward to it. This has meant so much to us."
The event takes place January 19 at 6 p.m. at Notre Dame Regional High School. There's a silent auction and donations greatly accepted. You can get tickets in advance or at the door. Tickets are $10.
