GOP attacks its female deficit in Congress

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Republicans launch drive to attract women candidates for Congress
  • Women comprise 8% of Republican House caucus; 29% of Democratic membership
  • Martha McSally, a fighter pilot who flew combat patrols, is running for Gabby Giffords' old seat
  • Top Democrat recruiter says her party doesn't need special project to attract women

Washington (CNN) -- If you're a Republican woman, the GOP wants you. To run for Congress, that is.

The Grand Old Party holds a majority of seats in the House of Representatives. Yet of 234 Republican members, only 19 are women.

In an effort to boost that number, the House Republican campaign committee is launching "Project GROW," a program largely led by the party's female members designed to bring more women into the fold.

CNN's Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash spoke exclusively with three sitting House Republican female members spearheading the effort, and one GOP woman hoping to score a House seat.

To a person, they recognize that at the very least, Republicans have an image problem-- especially after studying the results of the 2012 election.

According to CNN's 2012 exit polls, 55 percent of women voted for Barack Obama, a stark leap over the 44 percent who voted for Republican candidate Mitt Romney. And Democrats made gains in both the Senate and the House.

"We saw that as Republicans, even though we were talking about the issues that affected America, women across this country felt we were not connecting with them," Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-North Carolina) said.

Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Missouri), serving her first congressional term, said she and her colleagues need to talk to women "in a way that's going to make their life better and easier."

"You know, I told my colleagues close your eyes, say that you're speaking to that 37-year-old single mother of two who's trying to make it to the 15th and the 30th of the month," said Wagner. "What do we have to offer her? How do we make her life easier, better, more manageable? These are the kind of messaging things we need to do and I think we've got ... real opportunities here, both to motivate women in the electorate, but also to motivate women to run for public office."

Indeed, women make up a mere 8% of the Republican House caucus. House Democratic women comprise a staggering 29%, by comparison.

The Republican women agree it boils down to encouraging more GOP women to run.

Curiously, "women who are going to run for office, they almost need to be asked," Ellmers said. "They need to make sure there's a place for them."

Male GOP members, who don't traditionally seem to need such encouragement, are involved in recruiting women as well.

In fact, Project GROW also involves educating elected Republican men "about connecting with women and doing a better job and going out and meeting with women." Rep. Susan Brooks (R-Indiana) said.

"Women business owners, women volunteer organizations-- just doing a better job connecting with where they are, with things they care about," Brooks said.

Martha McSally, an Air Force fighter pilot who flew combat patrols over Iraq and Afghanistan, is running in a rematch for Gabby Giffords' old seat in Arizona, which she just barely lost to Democrat Ron Barber last year.

She is exactly the kind of political recruit these GOP women say they're looking for.

"The Democrats have been effective in attacking us and branding us in a way that's just not accurate," McSally said.

"So in my race ... my opponent, a white man, was trying to lump me in the war on women, she said, pointing to a Democratic attack line during the 2012 election accusing Republicans of waging a "war against women."

"And here I am a pioneering military woman, the first to fly in command in combat. I sued Donald Rumsfeld for making our servicewomen wear burkas over in Saudi Arabia. I mean, I am not a part of the 'war on women.' I've been fighting for women my whole life," she said.

McSally said she doesn't know why women make up only a small percentage of the GOP caucus.

"I can only say that in my experience, running that when I engage with Republican, independent and Democratic women in my community, and you talk about the issues that matter to them," she said. "If we you connect with them, and we're real, and we show our leadership, we show we're solution oriented."

Meanwhile, the top House Democrat recruiter told CNN her party doesn't need a special project to attract women candidates to run with our party."

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Florida), the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee charged with adding more Democratic members, said Republicans have a "wholly unappealing agenda" that alienates women and discourages them from affiliating themselves with the GOP.

She says Republicans are "wrong" on the economic, healthcare, cultural, and education agendas "that are important to women."

"I think acronyms are nice, but at the end of the day women voters in this country and potential women candidates are going to continue to choose the Democratic party because we value the input and feedback from women, and we're the party that grows leaders," she said.

Republicans have their work cut out for them. Project GROW's website says the effort will focus specifically on recruiting, messaging, polling, candidate training, fundraising, a strong digital presence, and other things "to increase female participation."

At the end of the day, Ellmers believes that, despite appearances, women voters largely lean Republican.

"That's why in Project GROW, we're going to be focusing on listening, and recruiting, and engaging and motivating," she said. "Because we want women across this country to be involved in Republican beliefs. We believe most women are conservative."

"Pope Francis on Monday continued to recast the Catholic Church?s image by focusing on its inviting,..."

Pope Francis on Monday continued to recast the Catholic Church?s image by focusing on its inviting, merciful aspects, this time shocking a planeload of reporters by saying of homosexuality: ?Who am I to judge??

?If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them?? the leader of the world?s 1.2 billion Catholics said in a remarkably candid and off-the-cuff news conference en route to Rome from Brazil. ?They shouldn?t be marginalized.?

The pope?s seemingly casual remark was another example of his approachable style, which was on full display during his visit to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day. He carried his own bag onto the plane and traveled around Rio in a small Fiat without being shielded by hordes of security. He met with recovering drug addicts in a hospital and condemned inequality in a visit to crime-ridden slums.

He made his comments about gays, signaling that the church looks on them as brothers and sisters, as he fielded questions from reporters for an 80-minute stretch, at times leaning on the back of an airplane seat as if he were just another passenger. With his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, reporters had to submit questions ahead of time, and the Vatican decided which ones the pontiff would answer.

? His predecessor made remarks that many gay Catholics interpreted as hostile. Even though Benedict called on Catholics to show ?great respect for [gay] people,? he oversaw the publication of a church document that called homosexual inclinations ?disordered? and called for men with ?deep-seated? gay tendencies to be barred from the priesthood. He also said same-sex marriage was insidious threat to the common good.

See the Offensive Map the Palestinian Negotiator Meeting with John Kerry This Week Has on His Facebook Page

In her statement announcing the resumption of peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians this week, State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki on Sunday said that the Palestinians will be represented by Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat and Mohammad Shtayyeh.

Middle East analyst Oren Kessler noticed something interesting about Shtayyeh's Facebook page; that is, that the Palestinian negotiator displays a map of the entire State of Israel - including its internationally recognized borders, plus Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) plus Gaza - emblazoned with the Arabic letters for "Palestine."

Whether by intention or not, the map is also shaded in green, a color traditionally associated with Islam.

Also on his Facebook profile, Shtayyeh displays a photograph of Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock which sits above the Temple Mount - the holiest site in Judaism.

The Palestinian Authority - which Shtayyeh is representing in the talks Kerry is hosting this week -- and the majority Fatah ruling party are considered by the U.S. and European community to constitute the more moderate leadership as compared with Hamas which states flat out that its goal is to destroy the Jewish state.

The Offensive Map the Palestinian Negotiator Meeting with Kerry this Week Has on His Facebook PageShtayyeh-FB

Shtayyeh's Facebook profile images include a map of the entire State of Israel emblazoned with the Arabic script for "Palestine." (Screenshot: Facebook)

Writer Aussie Dave from the pro-Israel blog Israelly Cool captures how the map is being perceived among many Israelis:

Yeah, that's the entire map of Israel covered in the Arabic for "Palestine" (Filastin). In other words [...] "We will pretend to negotiate for peace, but only as a means to an end. The end being the destruction of Israel and, in its place, a palestinian state in the entire land."

So the situation is even worse than we thought. Not only have we agreed to kick-start peace negotiations by releasing over 100 murderous, unrepentant terrorists, but we will be negotiating with someone who is not even hiding his true aim: Israel's destruction.

And the world won't even blink.

Raheem Kassam on Trending Central writes: "Such backhanded tactics are well known within Palestinian circles, and the recognition of the State of Israel is a rarity in the region."

Kerry in his invitation to the peace talks noted the "the courage shown by Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas" in agreeing to restart talks. "Both leaders have demonstrated a willingness to make difficult decisions that have been instrumental in getting to this point. We are grateful for their leadership," Kerry said.

"It seems for one of Abbas's negotiators however, the recognition of the State of Israel is one step too far, and reveals how these peace talks are more than likely to be completely in vain," Kassam adds.

As TheBlaze reported last week, Palestinian Authority Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash was caught on tape earlier this month hinting that any future peace deal with Israel would secretly be only a short-term arrangement, comparing it to a truce the Muslim prophet Mohammed negotiated only to break two years later.

That statement is but the latest example of Palestinian Authority officials hinting they might not be bound by the terms of any agreement requiring them to give up the hopes of one day securing more territory from Israel.

TheBlaze's coverage of the Israeli government's controversial decision to release 104 Palestinian prisoners from jail, many convicted murderers, can be seen here.

Greece pleads for Europe to adopt growth policies

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's prime minister on Monday urged European leaders to shift economic policies toward generating growth, as the country's bailout monitors complained it was making "slow progress" on key long-term reforms.

Antonis Samaras warned Greece's recession was hurting the government's efforts to reduce debt. It was "worsening problems that we must solve and complicating reforms which we must complete," he said.

But Samaras, who held talks in Athens with Italian Premier Enrico Letta, said a Greek recovery would not be possible unless the group of 17 European Union countries that use the euro emerges from recession.

"Greece, Italy and all of Europe are in need of policies that combine reforms and deficit reduction with growth," Samaras said. "Of course we cannot have growth while Europe is retreating into recession."

The eurozone has been in recession for 18 months, while Greece's economy has been contracting rapidly since late 2008 and remains in serious crisis.

Greece's public finances have been kept afloat since 2010 by a recue loan program funded by eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund set to total 240 billion euros ($319 billion). But austerity reforms demanded in return for the money have triggered a dramatic increase in poverty and unemployment.

In a 234-page report released Monday, the European Commission, the EU executive branch that helps monitor the bailout program, recommended disbursement of a 2.5-billion euro rescue loan payment to Greece in the next couple of days.

And the IMF separately said it has approved release of 1.72 billion euros under the same program. So far, Athens has received some 210 billion euros in bailout payments.

But the European Commission also said Greece was still lagging behind in its effort to reform public administration, its business rules, power utilities, and its generally slow justice system.

"Greece continues to make overall, albeit often slow, progress ... with several important actions being delayed," the report said.

It warned the outlook for this year and next remains highly uncertain. The budget deficit is expected to exceed the official target by 1.75 and 2 percentage points of annual GDP in 2015 and 2016.

To make up for the shortfall this year and next, Greece has agreed to implement a new tax on luxury products, raise court fees for lawsuits, impose a docking fee for leisure boats in October and further cut military spending.

In Washington, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said Greece needed to take urgent steps to make its privatization program more effective. She praised the country for getting its budget and external finances in better shape but said Greece needed to do more on improving tax collection and other structural changes to the economy in order to recover.

"Given the slow progress in public administration reforms, efforts should focus on ensuring exit of unqualified personnel to create room to hire new staff with the relevant skills," Lagarde said.

On the upside, the European Commission report said tourism, a key earner worth about 16 percent of Greece's annual output, is expected to do well this year, with pre-bookings data suggesting arrivals are set to increase more than 10 percent compared with 2012.

Italian Premier Letta appeared to agree with Samaras that bailout lenders were too focused on debt cuts rather than economic growth, and was sharply critical of how Greece's rescue was handled.

"I have no doubts about Greece," he said. "There were serious mistakes made by Europe over these past years, with the wrong tools and the wrong timing ... Fewer European jobs would have been lost if Europe had taken a different position toward Greece from the start."

Baseball league official dies in fall from roof

A Sandwich roofer who was also a deputy commissioner with the Cape Cod Baseball League has died after falling from a roof in town.

Fire department officials say they responded to a home in town late Thursday morning for reports of a fall. They estimated the fall at 35 to 40 feet.

Capt. Scott Ames says the man was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable where he died.

League officials identified the victim as 61-year-old James McNally, the owner of a roofing and siding installer.

The death left the league in shock. League spokesman John Garner told the Cape Cod Times it was "a sad day for the Cape League family."

McNally was also a former umpire for the amateur league.

Stock futures fall in pause after rally, mixed earnings

By Angela Moon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street was set for a lower open on Friday as the market took a breather from a recent rally that has taken the S&P 500 up 18.5 percent for the year and as investors digested a slew of major earnings.

Major U.S. stock indexes have advanced steadily this year with the S&P 500 hitting an all-time high earlier this week. The broad market index has ended higher 13 times in the past 16 sessions. For July, the benchmark has added 5.2 percent.

"As investors absorb many earnings reports this morning, they are also questioning, 'Can we get through the 1,700 (on the S&P 500)? Can we get a push beyond this round number?'" said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York.

"I still think the short-term weakness will just provide more buying opportunities for investors that have missed the boat."

In economic news, the ThomsonReuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index is due at 9:55 a.m. ET.

S&P 500 futures fell 8.3 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 63 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures lost 5.5 points.

On Thursday, the S&P 500 added 4.31 points, or 0.26 percent, to end at 1,690.25.

In earnings, Starbucks Inc shares rose 7 percent to $72.94 in premarket trade, a day after the world's biggest coffee chain posted a bigger-than-expected jump in quarterly profit.

Falling shares included Amazon.com Inc , which lost 1.7 percent to $298.23 in premarket trade after the company's forecast disappointed on income and revenue. Amazon.com is faced with a weaker international market, overshadowing improved profit and economic conditions in the United States.

Zynga Inc shares plunged 17.4 percent in premarket trade a day after the company announced it will largely abandon its efforts to build an online gaming business in the United States.

Online travel agency Expedia Inc shares plunged 23 percent to $50.20 a day after the company reported a quarterly profit far short of market estimates due to higher competition and poor performance in its discount website, Hotwire.com.

As of Thursday's close, 47 percent of the S&P 500 companies reported earnings, and about 68 percent of them have topped profit forecasts, above the historical average of 63 percent. About 56 percent have reported better-than-expected revenue, a rate that is below the historical average.

In M&A news, Vivendi plans to sell the bulk of its stake in Activision Blizzard Inc to the video games maker and its management for $8.2 billion, the French conglomerate's second blockbuster deal in a week.

Activision shares, one of the most traded in premarket, jumped 16.6 percent to $17.72.

European shares edged lower on Friday. Germany's DAX <.gdaxi> market had already unsettled some investors this week with profit warnings from some of its leading companies. <.eu/>

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei share average slid 3 percent and was near a three-week low on Friday, with blue-chip exporters and financials leading declines on the back of a stronger yen and profit-taking. <.t/>

Snowden's remaining docs unlikely to tie US hands

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's the stuff of spy novels: The hunted-down protagonist wins in the end because he's got damaging documents squirreled away, a bargaining chip against the bureaucrats who want to silence him.

If National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden thinks he's living in such a thriller, legal experts say he's got another think coming. Nothing he has is likely to scare off the prosecution.

Snowden, stuck at a Russian airport while he seeks asylum from several countries, has not overtly threatened the U.S. that he would release more damaging documents. But the journalist through whom he has been working, Glenn Greenwald, has said that blueprints that detail how the NSA operates will be made public if something should happen to Snowden.

"This is his insurance policy," said Greenwald, a columnist with Britain's Guardian newspaper who received Snowden's initial leaks and who communicates with the former NSA systems analyst. In a July 13 article in the Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Greenwald said, "The U.S. government should be on its knees praying every day that nothing happens to Snowden, because if something does happen, all the information would be revealed and this would be its worst nightmare."

The Justice Department is not discussing its prosecution strategy. But while the U.S. isn't eager for any more classified information to be disclosed, there's little chance Snowden will be able to use what he has as a bargaining chip to negotiate his prosecution or extradition. That's because giving into threats would risk opening the door for others to take similar action in the future.

The government must take the position: "We don't negotiate with extortionists," said Michael Chertoff, the former head of the Justice Department's criminal division and former secretary of homeland security. Chertoff said he can't recall a case in which the U.S. government has caved under this type of threat.

"I'm betting that there is virtually nothing that Snowden could do or threaten to persuade the (U.S. government) not to prosecute," said Peter Zeidenberg, a former federal prosecutor who was on the team that prosecuted I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the Bush administration official who revealed the name of a CIA officer. Zeidenberg said doing so would send a damaging message from the U.S.: "If you are going to steal secrets, get the crown jewels; that way, the government will never dare to prosecute."

Snowden leaked details of two top secret U.S. surveillance programs. He has been charged with three offenses, including espionage, and could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that if Snowden releases any more of the materials, Russia will not grant him temporary asylum.

"If the Obama administration responds with an even harsher hand against me, they can be assured that they'll soon find themselves facing an equally harsh public response," Snowden said in a June 17 online question-and-answer forum.

"Snowden has information enough to cause more damage to the U.S. government in a single minute than any other person has ever had in the history of the United States," Greenwald said in the article in La Nacion.

Mark Zaid, an attorney who has represented people charged with espionage, said these threats from Snowden and Greenwald are a form of graymail, a tactic in which defendants charged with spying try to force the government to drop the charges by threatening to expose U.S. secrets on the witness stand.

Zaid said every time Snowden releases more documents it could create additional criminal charges. Zaid is not working on Snowden's defense and hasn't been contacted by the leaker. But if he were representing Snowden, Zaid said, "I'd tell him to shut up" and accept the marriage proposal from Russian spy Anna Chapman. On July 3, the attractive redhead who was swept up with nine other sleeper agents and deported from the U.S. in 2010 tweeted, "Snowden, will you marry me?"

"The only thing really he's got now is either minimize the penalties going forward or work out some favorable resolution he's comfortable with somewhere in the world," Zaid said of Snowden.

And even then, it would be difficult for the U.S. government to negotiate, he said.

"Because it's not just about Snowden anymore," Zaid said. "It's about anyone who would follow in his footsteps."

Graymail is a common defense tactic, and three decades ago a law was passed to combat it. Attorneys say the law was meant to let judges sort out the classified information behind closed doors and determine what the defense genuinely needs to make public. If the judge concludes the defendant cannot get a fair trial without spilling secrets, the government can decide whether to go forward or drop the case.

But Snowden has yet to enter into court proceedings. The government is in the process of trying to extradite him to face the charges.

U.S. officials have said what Snowden already released will harm national security, though it's too early to tell what damage has been done. The U.S. intelligence community has a good idea of what other documents he has.

"I wouldn't describe it as graymail," Chertoff said. "I would describe it as blackmail."

As Chertoff sees it, Snowden's message to the government is this: "If you do anything that Snowden doesn't like he's going to try to hurt you by putting out information that could be damaging."

"To me, that's extortion," Chertoff said.

When Snowden arrived at Moscow's international airport on June 23 he was believed to be planning simply to transfer to a flight to Cuba and then to Venezuela to seek asylum. But the U. S. canceled his passport, stranding him. He hasn't been seen in public since, although he met with human rights activists and lawyers on June 12. He's applied for temporary asylum in Russia and has said he'd like to visit the countries that offered him permanent asylum ? Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

How that Luxury Handbag Can Influence Your Relationships Does purchasing a designer hand bag or a high-end sports car play a role in a romantic relationship?

According to new research, the answer is affirmative although men and women use the acquisition of luxury products for different and sometimes paradoxical reasons.

Scientists have known that purchasing designer handbags and shoes is a means for women to express their style, boost self-esteem, or even signal status.

In a new study, University of Minnesota researchers discovered some women also seek these luxury items to prevent other women from stealing their man.

Researchers used five experiments featuring 649 women of varying ages and relationship statuses to discover how women?s luxury products often function as a signaling system directed at other women who pose a threat to their romantic relationships.

?It might seem irrational that each year Americans spend over $250 billion on women?s luxury products with an average woman acquiring three new handbags a year, but conspicuous consumption is actually smart for women who want to protect their relationship,? says associate professor Vladas Griskevicius.

?When a woman is flaunting designer products, it says to other women ?back off my man.??

Griskevicius and PhD student Yajin Wang first investigated what other women infer about a woman?s relationship partner based on the luxuriousness of her possessions.

?We found that a woman who is wearing luxury items and designer brands is perceived to have a more devoted partner and as a result other women are less likely to flirt with him,? says Wang.

?Regardless of who actually purchased the items, other women inferred that the man had something to do with it and is thus more devoted to her.?

In another study, Griskevicius and Wang made participants feel jealous by having them imagine that another woman was flirting with their man. Shortly afterward, the women completed a seemingly unrelated task in which they drew a luxury brand logo on a handbag.

The result? When women felt jealous, they drew designer logos that were twice the size of those in the other conditions.

?The feeling that a relationship is being threatened by another woman automatically triggers women to want to flash Gucci, Chanel, and Fendi to other women,? explains Wang.

?A designer handbag or a pair of expensive shoes seems to work like a shield, where wielding a Fendi handbag successfully fends off romantic rivals.?

Another of Griskevicius and Wang?s studies revealed that when romantic relationships were threatened, women not only desired more expensive handbags, cars, cell phones, and shoes, they also spent 32 percent more of their own money for a chance to win an actual luxury spending spree.

Investigators believe the study shows that luxury products serve an important function in relationships, but that men and women use conspicuous consumption for a different purpose.

Past research by Griskevicius has found that men often seek expensive products to show off to the opposite sex in order to attract them as mates. The current studies reveal that women often seek expensive products to show off to the same sex in order to protect their turf.

?The fact that most women?s luxury products are aimed to impress other women helps explain why men have a hard time figuring out if a woman?s handbag costs $50 or $5,000,? adds Griskevicius.

?Women?s designer products are geared to show off to other women not men.?

Researchers were surprised to find that jealousy triggered a desire for luxury products not just for women in committed relationships but also for single women.

?Many single women obviously want designer products, but instead of these products saying back off my current man, the single woman is saying back off my future man,? adds Wang.

?Conspicuous consumption for women has a lot to do with subtle status within the female group.?

The study will be published in a forthcoming edition of the Journal of Consumer Research.

(AP) ? It's the perfect fit.

Two of the world's top bra makers are coming together in the biggest development in the $11.5 billion underwear industry in years.

Hanesbrands, which makes the Wonderbra, said Tuesday that it agreed to buy bra and underwear company Maidenform Brands Inc. for about $547 million. The deal would add brands like Maidenform, Flexees and Self Expressions to the Hanesbrand roster that includes Playtex, Bali, Champion, Wonderbra and its namesake Hanes.

The merger comes as traditional bra and underwear makers are facing tough competition from specialty stores such as Victoria's Secret that focus on frilly designs and newer rivals like Spanx that make shapewear that promises to control and smooth out bulges.

"Maidenform has great brands that consumers trust," said Hanes CEO Richard A. Noll. "Combining the complementary strengths of both companies creates a lot of growth opportunities."

Bras, which are as much about fashion as they are about function these days, are the biggest sellers in the intimate apparel arena, making up about 48 percent of all sales, according to research firm IBIS world. Panties make up about 24.8 percent of sales, sleepwear makes up about 22 percent and shapewear 5.2 percent, according to IBIS figures.

The bra and underwear industry has growth spurts when new trends come along. Think: boy shorts three years ago, for example, or shapewear over the past two years. But when it comes to what they're wearing underneath their clothes, Americans have cut back on their shopping habits since the recession.

"It used to be women invested in their intimates, now they're investing either in their bra wardrobe or panty wardrobe," said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with The NPD Group. "The economy changed the way we buy; we're not buying everything all at once anymore."

The industry has been playing with sizing in recent years to get growth. From 20 sizes 20 years ago, there are now more than 90 sizes, said Kate Terhune, marketing manager for Intimacy, a chain that specializes in helping women find the right size undergarments. And HanesBrands said Wednesday that Maidenform's average-figure bra business will complement its full-figure bra collection.

Ninety-one-year-old Maidenform was a pioneer in the bra industry in the 1920s, patenting the first modern-seamed "uplift" bra in1925. But the Iselin, N.J. has been suffering from losses, hurt by tough competition in the shapewear business and lower sales from department stores, where Maidenform products are traditionally sold.

The company said it has been evaluating its strategic options. Maidenform CEO Maurice Reznik said that the deal was appealing in part because it provides the necessary infrastructure and resources to help grow its business.

Matthew Butlein, president of freshpair.com, an online underwear retailer, said he thought the move was a smart one for Maidenform since the company can use Hanesbrands marketing team to get more exposure for its brands, as well as its Visr service, a self-service wholesale portal that lets smaller boutiques place underwear orders directly instead of dealing with sales reps. Hanesbrands, for its part, will get more youthful lines from Maidenform, since Hanesbrands lines tend to skew older.

Both companies' boards unanimously approved the acquisition, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter. It still needs approval from Maidenform shareholders.

Hanesbrands shares rose $4.15, or 7.8 percent, to $57.51, after earlier reaching a 52-week high of $59.35. Maidenform shares rose $4.31, or 22.6 percent, to $23.40. The stock has traded between $16.50 and $26.37 during the past 52 weeks.

Hanesbrands, based in Winston Salem, N.C., was founded in 1901 as a men's hosiery business. It expanded into men's underwear in 1920 and added women's bras in 1971 when it acquired Bali Brassiere Company.

Hanes has a 14.3 percent share in the underwear market, according to Euromonitor International, behind only L Brands, which owns Victoria's Secret. Maidenform, meanwhile, is the fifth largest player in the market with a 2.5 percent share.

The deal fits into the company's strategy to make acquisitions that will boost earnings. The Maidenform deal is expected to add to earnings within 12 months, with full benefits in three years. It acquired GearCo., which sells licensed logo apparel in college bookstores, in 2010, and acquired TNF Group Pty Ltd., an activewear supplier in Australia, in 2011.

Hanesbrands will pay $23.50 per share, a 23 percent premium to Maidenform's $19.09 Tuesday closing price. The companies put the deal's value at about $575 million.

Hanesbrands anticipates being able to potentially lower the costs of Maidenform products for retailers and consumers. Currently Maidenform sources its products from third-party manufacturers. With the acquisition, HanesBrands said Maidenform will now be able to take advantage of HanesBrands' company-owned manufacturing, which is supplemented by third-party manufacturers.

Hanesbrands spokesman Matt Hall said it was too early to say whether there would be layoffs related to the acquisition, but said there is "typically overlap of independent company corporate functions that would be redundant."

Discover Financial's profit jumps 13 pct in 2Q

An increase in loans and interest income helped boost Discover Financial Services' net income by 13 percent in the second quarter, trumping Wall Street expectations.

The credit card issuer and lender said Tuesday that sales volume for its namesake credit card grew 4 percent to $27.6 billion in the April-June period. Credit card loans rose 5 percent to $49.8 billion.

David Nelms, Discover's chairman and CEO, told Wall Street analysts during a conference call that card loan growth during the quarter was at the high end of what the company expected. He also noted that card spending trended higher as the quarter went on, ending with spending being up in June versus the same month last year.

"So on the one hand it feels like we might have a little more momentum building," Nelms said. "On the other hand, we still see a lot of mixed economic data coming in."

Credit card issuers such as Discover benefit from an improving economy and consumer spending.

This year, the economy is showing more robust signs of growth, with employers having added an average 202,000 jobs the past six months, up from 180,000 in the previous six. The housing market is also gaining strength. And consumer confidence last month hit the highest level since January 2008, according to the Conference Board.

While consumers are increasing their spending, their pace has dropped off sharply from the start of the year. Core U.S. retail sales ? which excludes volatile spending on autos, gasoline and building supplies ? increased from April through June at a 2.7 percent annual rate. That's down from a 4.2 percent rate during the first three months of the year.

The U.S. economy is still struggling four years after the recession officially ended. Growth remains tepid. Wages are barely keeping pace with inflation. And unemployment is a still-high 7.6 percent.

Nelms said in an interview that the growth in consumer confidence bodes well for card spending, which has been outpacing loan growth for some time. He noted that the rate of late payments has fallen to all-time lows, which suggests that unemployment isn't an issue for the company's cardholders and borrowers.

"So I'm not sure the unemployment rate is going to necessarily impact us going forward," Nelms said.

Apart from credit cards, Discover benefited from loan growth across several of its operating units, including private student loans, personal loans and home loans.

Private student loans grew 5 percent from a year earlier, while personal loans, which many borrowers are using to pay down debt, jumped 22 percent.

All told, overall loans increased 6 percent to $61.7 billion from a year earlier. Net interest income, or money earned from loans, rose by 9 percent to $1.43 billion.

Discover plans to begin offering home equity loans in the current quarter, but the move likely won't be a factor on its bottom line before next year.

The company sees an opportunity for demand in home equity loans, as home values continue rise and mortgage interest rates increase, making refinancing a less attractive option for homeowners.

Discover's payment services business didn't fare as well as its other segments. It generated a $21 million loss for the quarter, partly because of charges that Discover booked to support its Diners Club International franchises in Europe.

Some of Discover's local partners in Europe are struggling through the region's economic slowdown. So, in order to minimize a disruption to cardholders, Discover acquired the Diners Club franchise in Italy and is providing financial assistance to help a European bank acquire the franchise.

"I don't see Europe turning around really quickly, but I also don't see it being a major drag to Discover," Nelms said.

For the three months ended June 30, Discover posted a profit after paying preferred dividends of $588 million, or $1.20 per share.

That compares with net income of $520 million, or 99 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue net of interest expense climbed to $2.04 billion from $1.87 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.15 per share on $2 billion in revenue.

Riverwoods, Ill.-based Discover, best known for its namesake credit card, is the sixth-largest U.S. credit-card issuer.

Discover's shares ended regular trading down 17 cents at $50.71. The stock added 29 cents to $51 in after-hours trading.

Emmerdale's Gaynor Faye collects honorary degree from hometown university

Emmerdale star Gaynor Faye ? who plays Megan Macey on the rural soap ? has said she is ?thrilled? to have been awarded an honorary degree from a university in her hometown of Leeds.

Faye was presented with an honorary Doctorate of Arts at the graduation ceremony at Leeds Metropolitan University this week for her work ? which also included four years as Judy Mallett on Coronation Street.

Digital Spy quoted the soap star as saying: "I'm so thrilled to be given this honorary degree from Leeds Metropolitan University.

?Leeds is where my heart is, I'm a patriotic Leeds girl and I never thought the day would come that I'd actually get a cap and gown.

"My mum and dad have got cap and gowns, my sister has - but I don't, so this is going to fill a massive void on my mum and dad's wall!?

The actress ? who won the first Dancing On Ice back in 2006 ? also had a few words of wisdom for those picking up their degrees on the same day.

?The advice I would give to graduates is to always follow your dream, work hard and be persistent,? Gaynor added.

"Persistence always pays off together with hard work. Don't expect it to land in your lap, you have to chase it."

Samsung to debut global developers conference in San Francisco on October 27-29

Samsung's first ever global developer's conference hits San Francisco October 2729

Samsung has just announced that it'll put on its first global developers conference in San Francisco on October 27-29, 2013, joining the other cool tech kids, Google, Microsoft and Apple. Details are scant for now other than the invitation copy (shown above), which promises hobnobbing with "industry leaders" and "fellow developers." We'd also expect the usual coding workshops and the like, and Samsung told us that the event would apply to "all divisions, platforms and devices," and not just mobile. The sign-up page will go live later this summer, so if you're looking to get your code (and schmooze) on, better keep an eye on the source -- these things tend to fill up fast.

Texas campaign seeks candidates for affordable health insurance

DALLAS ? If the Affordable Care Act is ever to work, volunteers like Luis Veloz and Allison Brim from the Texas Organizing Project must be successful first.

Six days a week they go door-to-door in low-to-middle income neighborhoods explaining Obamacare to the uninsured.

Texas is among the states refusing to help implement the Affordable Care Act.

"Well it's sure going to be easier in places where they want the law to work," said Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Promoting the plan is the reason she came to North Texas, before sitting down in an exclusive one-on-one with News 8.

"We may not have the government of the State of Texas, but we have lots of locally elected officials, county officials, health care providers and others who very much want the law to work, and want Texas to know about it," Sebelius added.

Open enrollment begins October 1.

Uninsured can sign up for coverage at the Healthcare.gov Marketplace.

Blue Cross, Humana and Aetna have already agreed to provide policies, Dallas County said, but rates have yet to be set.

The Obama administration hopes to sign up seven million uninsured people across the country in the coming months. But in order to be successful, the program needs a balanced risk pool that includes young, healthy people ? lots of them. Otherwise, premiums will skyrocket and the program will be unaffordable.

"I think it's a given we're not going to be able to get everybody," said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. "It's going to be a monumental task, and we're going to have to do the very best we can do."

Jenkins joined Sebelius, religious leaders, representatives from Dallas ISD, and the Dallas County Medical Society on Monday to discuss strategy about how to notify the uninsured who are eligible for the program.

"It's much cheaper to go to an emergency room in Manhattan than it is for you to go to the emergency room in Dallas County, and that's because we have such a high rate of uninsured," Jenkins said.

Dallas County has 506,000 uninsured, the fourth largest population of its kind in the country, Jenkins added.

Those are the very people the Texas Organizing Project and other non-profits like it hope to find.

See the entire interview with Secretary Sebelius on "Inside Texas Politics." It airs this Sunday at 9:05 a.m. on WFAA Channel 8.

A Story Not Yet Told

How ya doin'? My nickname is Finn and I am somekind of a student whose language isn't english; obviously; seeing my 'Location'. I have quite a complicated life, so I'll just make it brief: I was raised with two languages so basically english is my third one. Probably, you'll notice as you read what I write that I don't have much english vocabulary yet however, I can promise you that I am learning english like a crazy dog cuz I just love the language somehow. Probably because many songs are in english?

Ah well, anyhow, about my future dreams, I have some irregular and impossible craps that would never really happen. . . but even though I'll tell you. I am dreaming about as I publice a book of mine, it will be taken into a movie where I am the director as well as the leading actor. Impossible is it? Well -- probably because I just enjoy writing, acting and managing things. You could say that I am somekind of a prefectionist, who can make many mistakes [I am human after all >->]

Okay. Before I take this into an irrational length, I'll just get to the point.
If you want to have me, I really would like to take the Prince Role. Though I can understand it if you reject. However, if you say yes... well, it will make the ol' me happy, believe me. Hence, I'll start right away. Greetings!

Victim speaks out in bid to catch 2003 Washington rapist

A RAPE victim is today urging people to help catch the man who attacked her ten years ago.

Today (Monday July 22) is the anniversary of the knifepoint ordeal suffered by the victim, then aged 16, in Washington Old Village.

She was walking near the junction of the A1231 and Parkway at 8.30pm when a man dragged her into nearby bushes and raped her.

He threatened the girl with a knife leaving scratch marks on her throat.

The victim said: "Please help me find the man responsible for raping me so no one else has to go through what I am going through."

Detectives have continued to carry out extensive enquiries, but have not yet found the attacker.

DNA has allowed officers to eliminate more than 1,000 people from the enquiry.?

Superintendent Jim Napier, of Sunderland Area Command: ?Ten years ago a man raped a 16-year-old girl and threatened her with a knife in a vicious attack.

?Despite extensive enquiries he has never been caught and the victim has had to live for the past ten years knowing her attacker has never been brought to justice.

?We?re renewing our appeal to make sure he gets caught and faces the consequences of the attack and give the victim the opportunity to move on from the ordeal.

?The man will know he is wanted by police and our message to him is despite it being ten years since the attack, our enquiries will continue and new forensic advancements will mean we will find him."?

The rapist, now about 50, is 6ft tall and of medium build.

He was wearing a blue baseball cap, green cagoule or rainjacket, blue jeans and brown shoes.

Anyone with any information should contact Northumbria Police on 101, extension 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The New Mexico Angels have committed to investing $250,000 in the New Mexico biotech startup Tyrosine Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Tyrosine is developing a new class of drug aimed at protecting against stroke injuries, utilizing technology developed at the University of New Mexico by company CTO Dr. Surojit Paul.

?There?s not a lot of therapies for strokes,? said John Chavez, president of New Mexico Angels, an early-stage investment group. ?UNM had the research worked out, and worked on it for 10 years, and we licensed it.?

The Angels closed on the deal late Wednesday night, Chavez said.

The goal, Chavez said, will be to identify which tests will be required to prove efficacy, and to possibly do animal tests.

?If we can do that, we?ll shop it to a big pharmaceutical company,? Chavez said.

Tyrosine was awarded a $1.6 million National Institutes of Health grant in February of this year to research the new therapy.
